So yeah, I have a desktop and a couple of laptops which can access wireless internet from anywhere in the house.
One day I came home to find my brothers playing against each other on an old manager game.
This manager game, is probably the most boring, monotonous game I have ever played, and in multiplayer it's the same, only you have to wait through your opponent's matches before you can play yours! :-S
It looked awful, but it gave me an idea.
I went to a sale and bought 3 PC classics for a tenner (no FPS because you need a mouse and our laptops have those dodgy pad things, besides, we've got a Gamecube for action).
Dungeon Keeper 2 (not tried this yet but my brother says it's good).
Commando's (bloody fantastic classic! Fun, challenging, genius, etc)
And Command And Conquer Red Alert.
And what do I find?
Well, because Red Alert was written for Window 95, it's not working with XP or 98 on the old laptop. That's fantastic MS!
You update your system and forget to make it backwards compatable!
Yeah, it's got a DOS version with it, but the sound doesn't work properly and it can't detect my network for multiplayer.
I don't suppose there's any sort of patch to let it work on XP?
Because it loads using the DOS4GW file or whatever it is, it wont run on XP - not even with compatability modes set. - I've got both the Worms Collectors Pack and Worms United Sold Out edition - no luck with either.
Maybe. :-)
Now Worms United is hassling me...
You'd think that with it being a re-release they'd have ironed SOME of the problems, but the game won't even start up! :-S
btw: They're both the same price now :D
I reccomend you try to find the two expansion packs for it now:
Command & Conquer Red Alert: Counterstrike
&
Command & Conquer Red Alert: The Aftermath
New units, extra single and multiplayer* missions and extra maps for single player Skirmish mode :D
Plus, explore the installed file for a map editor!
*Note: Multiplayer maps are pretty much useless unless you can find a way around the disabling of network play.
Working a treat now.
Not tried networking yet but I might have a crack at getting around it! ;-)
Kernal, I COULD have paid 10 times as much for the newer version, but is it really worth that much more?
Besides, it is MS's fault.
The game was designed for windows and windows is meant to be backwardsly compatable.
Even if Red Alert lets me down, the shopping trip was worth it for Commando's alone...
Fantastic game!

1. Some of the oldest games are the best.
2. Microsoft are partly to blame for some of these decent games not working for they have removed proper DOS support from windows.
3. Microsoft don't make the machines (except Xbox, accessories, etc), they make software.
4. I smell quavers.
And well, I suggest you get recently released games. Descent games will work on Descent machins.
And why blame microsoft? westwood made the game, they are responsoble for it not working on a descent machine. Why blame microsoft? because they make descent machines?
By the way, if you like red alert 1 or 2, then your sure to like command and conquer generals. And the expansion for that, zero:hour
THINK,
I especially bought it for the multiplayer.
can you send the replacement file to
[email protected] (I don't know if I have your email)
please.
Thanks. :-)
Now what's all this about a compatibility mode?
Not heard about it yet?
How does it work?
