Er, last time I checked, you picked up the controller, positioned your hands around it, and when the game starts you push the buttons and move the thumb sticks.

If they are too big, i suggest you get the smaller one (also now considered the standard) So in theory my joypad is an antique Muahah
Sometimes a small one just doesn't suit.
