Playstation was first developed by employees of Nintendo when designing a disc drive for the SNES to rival the MegaCD.

In 1992 Nintendo went into partnership with Sony to produce the CD add-on for the SNES, and Nintendo were well aware that Sony had already previously announced the PlayStation. Nintendo executives reconsidered the wisdom of allowing a possible future rival full access to the SNES design and after letting Sony announce the SNES add-on deal at the Consumer Electronics Show in 1992 Nintendo then announced the following day that they were instead going into partnership with Philips N.V.
Sony executives were a little humiliated by this and so the go ahead was given to take the team developing the CD add-on for the SNES, headed up by a certain Ken Kutaragi, and put them back to work on the Sony PlayStation instead.
