In 1992 Nintendo went into partnership with Sony to produce the CD add-on for the SNES, and Nintendo were well aware that Sony had already previously announced the PlayStation. Sony executives were a little humiliated by this and so the go ahead was given to take the team developing the CD add-on for the SNES, headed up by a certain Ken Kutaragi, and put them back to work on the Sony PlayStation instead.
