Dreams. That's what I'm talking about. Maybe seeing a guy called NiGHTS! on the forum prompted me to think of this topic- the Saturn game, "NiGHTS! Into Dreams", is the perfect example of fresh, radical thinking being involved in games design.
In an era when all so many games are just like the last one, with more polygons and some quirky changes, few games captivate my imagination. Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3 and more, endless racing games, each "more realistic than the rest", games that never should be. But every so often a ray of light emmerges. NiGHTS!, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi. All zany, weird games, original in idea, fun to play.
Why can't more developers be original. I'm not asking for EA to make Fifa 3000- a hovering football game set in a zero-gravity environment.... just something a little different. How pathetic is it that so many games use "find the switch" rules, whereby you run round, press a switch, and open a door miles away that opens a new level in the same format. What would make an amazing game would be if you started with no switches- all the doors were open, and there would be nothing stopping you from entering them. Then how would you make a game interesting? Developers would have to be original. That would be such a break through.
And then there are standard tactics in various genres. In FPS games enemies just happen to leave guns in wooden crates. Stupid? What's even stupider is that the crate blows up when you shoot it! Even more amazingly- the gun withtin is unharmed! What about this. You are a secret agent. You begin the level with your handgun and whatever esle the secret service give you. You can only get more weapons from a central weapons depot, or by sniping enemies and stealing their weapons. No longer are rocket launchers left in a corner. The player would have to use the upmost intelligence to get past a level.
Well, those are just a few ideas. It doesn't take much to be original, but it does take guts to develop something original.
DONT POST MANY TOPICS.
I don't think he is for real lads, who are you really Logan?
It's just that I feel i'm not helping the site much if I don't write something good, or useful - and so I posted an attempt.
Cheers.
