Sorry sorry sorry for that horrible title... but I had to think of something.

All I can say is wow, this seems an amazing Idea... Before Rickoss harps on about the Virtual Boy and 64DD may I point out that the VB enduced headaches which was why it failed and the 64DD was released too late.

This new DS probably means Nintendo are to abandon their GBA connectivity feature as this essentially does the same thing!!!!! For those who haven't read the press release I will put it down below, but this is a really fantastic original and pure fun idea.

In a shocking announcement which is set to rock the gaming world, Nintendo have released details of their forthcoming DS Portable gaming system. Rumours began flying a few weeks ago after mysterious words were uttered from Nintendo spokes people regarding a new machine. Some thought the machine would be the fabled “Game Boy Enhanced” with the mighty power to play Game Boy Advance AND Gamecube games, however this is not the case.

This surprising move from Nintendo sees them releasing a third stand-alone portable system to take games playing and interactivity to a completely different plane of existence! This new machine will feature not one but two 3” TFT LCD screens to allow for greater scope and perspective on the games. The two screens will be backlit to allow for poor-light play. The main processor is pparently an "ARM 9" with the Sub-processor an "ARM 7".

Here’s the official word from Nintendo:

”Players can look forward to being able to manage their game progress from two different perspectives, enhancing both the speed and strategy of the challenge. For example in a football game, you can view the whole game on one screen, while simultaneously focusing on an individual footballer's tackle or goal on the other screen. Players will no longer be forced to interrupt game play to shift perspective, such as moving from a wide shot to a close up, or alternating between a character's ongoing battle and a map of their environment. Nintendo DS makes it possible to perform the tasks in real time by simply glancing from one screen to the other.”

Self-styled “Funny Man of Gaming” and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had this to say on the new product:

"We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century"

The Nintendo DS will feature two separate screens, separate processors and a semiconductor memory of up to 1 gigabit. It will be marketed and sold as a separate entity to Game Boy Advance and the Gamecube systems. More information will be available at E3 when the system will be fully unveiled for the first time. Nintendo says we can expect a world-wide launch before the end of the year!

As it transpires Killer 7 is mutli-format although released on the Gamecube first...

But why did you mention it Belldandy... it is hardly the biggest release of the year unlike Resident Evil 4.

Until I see images and specs, I can't get interested. I'll hold my judgement till then.

IGN:

More details on Nintendo's mysterious new DS portable system have come our way via the latest issue of Japan's Famitsu magazine.

The magazine clears up some confusion regarding the system's game storage media. Rather than standard cartridges, the DS will make use of thin card-type media. Apparently, this form of media uses a new type of semiconductor whose production cost is close to that of optical disk (DVD, CD, etc.). In addition, the media allows for quicker turnover times over cartridges in case of reorders for product.
Details on the system's appearance and functionality are also discussed by the magazine. The DS will make use of an LCD screen different from that of the Game Boy Advance. The possibility for connectivity with the Game Boy Advance has yet to be determined. However, Nintendo isn't so reserved on the idea of wireless LAN support, saying details on this feature will have to wait until E3. This seems to confirm that the system will indeed have wireless LAN.

And, just in case you were wondering, Nintendo plans on making use of rechargeable battery to power the system.

The magazine also reveals some details on software development. Development for the system has begun, with Miyamoto himself taking part. Nintendo feels that it will be able to reveal specifics on third party support at E3.

Pricing and launch details will have to wait until E3 and beyond. Nintendo plans to announce the price at E3, but this announcement could slip to the summer depending on the state of the LCD market. As for a launch date, Nintendo is currently planning for a worldwide simultaneous release at the end of 2004. However, this could change, again depending on the state of the LCD market. The company plans on revealing solid details on the launch of the system following its May financial report.

There are still lots of questions left to be answered regarding the DS. Expect more details to slip out leading up to E3.

The Gamecube's original price was £169.99... they expected a price drop after the appaling launch of the X-box... Microsoft rushed a £100 price cut... people went mad pointing out Nintendo's difference was a mere £30... Then Nintendo topped it off the following Monday by droppin the price to £129.99...a praised effort as it seemed Nintendo had this already planned and for those already willing to pay £170... well look at that the exact money taken off is the price of a game... get one of them instead.

A genius move by Nintendo that has yet to be beaten... you are lying about the £200 original price because my pre-order slip right here clearly states £170.

As for Metroid Prime, a game that hit number one in Europe is not a game that didn't do well...

I know a PS owning MGS fan... they don't plan to ditch their PS2 but due to already being tempted by the Cube the fact a special exclusive MGS is being released means he and the millions of other die hard MGS fans will get the system as a second console. My Final Fantasy loving friend things Crystal Chronicles looks amazing. It's final fantasy for sods sake.

As for Capcom you my friend are a liar. 1: Regarding the 4 exclusive games, Capcom planned to release these games for the Gamecube because of their hardcore underground nature... if these games do VERY well then it isn't impossible they'll appear on other formats in a year or so... P.n. 03 will not be appearing on the PS2, neither will Viewtiful Joe and as far as I'm concerned neither is Killer 7... I have heard no rumour about this at all.

Oh and as for Resident Evil 4, after a magazine reported it going multi-format CApcom released a statement slanting the magazine and claiming it is all lies... Resident Evil 4 is released exclusivly for Nintendo Gamecube at the end of the year.

You my young sir are a fool.

I thought Metal Gear Solid 2 was very good. Not as great as the first, but as good as Splinter Cell.

It must have taken the developers all of 20 minutes to create the shell, after all every section was just a repeat of the previous section, still some people get fun out of watching birds and collecting stamps...

Thats funny, I am sure the original had a decent story and some enjoyable gameplay rather than some tedious, repetitive and utterly guff gameplay witnessed for 90% of the second Metal Gear game.

Alastair, you must be quite annoyed that a lot of the "utterly disappointing" gameplay features of MGS2 are being put into the MGS remake... brings it down a bit doesn't it?
