Before I start, I would like to say that I know this is going to cause major uproar with the RPG enthusiasts but I'm going to wrtie it anyway, you never know it might get some posts going again.

First of all I would like to point out the most important good point about RPG'S. They are long. That is probably the only thig that goes in RPG's favour. The are very involving, and you can tell that a great deal of effort has gone into the plot of the game so that it takes a great deal of time to be completed by us, the gamers. That's is it as far as good point, now onto why I dont like them.

Firstly, They are unrealistic. You are ment to get completely emmersed in the character, share their emotions etc, but as far as I know, nobody had magical powers and can conjour up spells. Yet these spells are quite often the mainstay of the game itself. If they are going to include magic, I dont think that it should be the major part of the game, because it makes it lose some of it's realism. I know that there is a huge other argument about realism vs fun, but I cant get inside the head of someone who is using secret incantations and mixing potions together.

Next I will address the bad side of the length. Many people have short attention span, that is why in films, one camera angle is not kept for longer than 10 seconds, usually. You dont see action films showing a fight scene from one side, and that side only, they chop and change the direction the camera is facing, to keep us interested. Now if a game has 70+ hours of gaming inside it, how do they intend to keep up hooked for that entire 70 hours. In my opinion they cant I have tried to play one of the Final fantasys I think it was 7, but I seemed to be playing for hours and getting nowhere. I dont like a game where I have to wait ages to get to no-where. I think that 40 hours of game play should be max, or have everlasting games like the sims, and most management games. I dont like the idea of playing for 2 years, and not finishing a game. It seems pointless, a waste of time.

Next how repetative the games are. In my opinion If you have played one, you have played them all. This is also my view of FPS's aswell. I really hate Zelda. I have played both the SNES and (first) 64 version, and it seems all you do is go around pressing that button, to swing your sword, then press it agan and again and again. As each ememy comes to you, you just swing your sword and they die. Then you have to talk to a person. They tell you nothing of interest. You talk to another person, neither do they. Then you talk to another person and they say if you bring me something from the other side of this world, I'll talk to you, so you set off on your journey, and guess what. To get this thing, generally a stone, book or potion, you have got to kill lots more guards. Where's the fun in that? It's so repetative. It's the same with FPS's, You use your gun, click on that mutated creature, it dies, then the next one, then the next one. Where's the fun? It's just the same thing repeated over 20+ levels and THAT'S IT!

That's my major gripe with them, you just seem to do the same thing hour after hour after hour, and it gets more and more boring. There's no tactics involved, all you have to do is just look at a map find where you are going next, and kill a load of creatures on the way, with some stupid magic potion or with a sword.

Another thing, there is no originality, it's just a different story, with some things having a name change.
sorry but I dont like RPG's they just dont work for me, I know alot of you love them, but I just see them as an everlasting, boring, repetative, waste of £30!

Sometimes I like RPG's...well I like them all the time it is just whether I want to play on them or not! I mean a week ago I had the chance to claim my prize as Baldur's Gate 2 and Neverwinter nights, which would have been realased by the time I complete Baldur's gate!! But I didnt really feel like wanting to spend hours of my summer trapped inside!! So I picked a game with good replayability and was fun for an hour!!

But RPG's if you play them a lot do, everything cooldogs said that they dont do!! You just need to get to like them first, because some games put me off playing any games from that genre which was RTS and strategy games, and now I love them...I first played Settlers 3 and I hated it!! I still hate it now, but not as much and I like most games that appear in this genre now, like Black & White and Cossacks etc.

It is the same with every other genre including the RPG genre! I dont know if you have given those types of games a chance, but they are quite enjoyable if you have a bit of spare time on your hands and after a while it will grow on you and you will find you like playing them a little more often! And the games are meant to be unrealistic in the story aspect, as in magic, olden days, knights, journies etc. is better if you think about it than an undercover cop thing like Max Payne which would only really work as a shoot em up which is what makes it as good as it is! But it would be interesting to see what developers come up with in a modern RPG!

So they make a good change from the usual FPS, straetgey etc., they are good for things like now, when a lot of people are saving and are buying games that will last them till the launch of the GameCube and Xbox, and are very enjoyable to play!!

Take out the random battles and those spikey-haired cutesy characters and I'd play them. I like big gameworlds and long adventures, but most I've played are repetitive, save-the-princess-from-the-dark-one twaddle.

If you don't like RPG's its cool. It's like some food 'init. Take chocolate for example, some people like it some people hate it. Oh marmite, thats a better example.

I dont remember writing that review of microsoft train sim. I cant believe that I wrote that!

I really dont remember it, I'm not joking, honestly...

Oh I do. I remember writing it cos I was bored and I thought that If I worte a review on a game nobody liked then I would win a gameaday.

I cant believe I wrote that, that must have been with a tempory lapse of madness.

I dont agree with what I wrote in the review, I just wanted a GAD.

That's how I'll justify that, but I still wouldnt be seen dead with that game.
I cannnot believe I wrote that, I think an imposter did it!

"I for one will be one of the first to buy this game because I think that it will be a great addition to my collection. So please lets cool the jokes on microsoft, they do try hard and if you open your mind to new possibilities then you could find that you like the game!"

As far as RPGs go, I have never really been a great fan, but then again, this is probably because I haven't played many, in fact I have only played two from start to finish and enjoyed them. Those are, Zelda: Link's Awakening on the Gameboy and Final Fantasy 7 on the Playstation. Zelda can be cited as being boring and repetitive, maily because it is repetitive, but the Gameboy had a brilliant Zelda game, I don't know if this is because I was only little when it came out, but when I did play it, I did enjoy it. I cannot say the same for OOT on the N64, I didn't like that game at all, really boring.

As for Final Fantasy VII, what can I say, brilliant. It has an immersive, immotional and cinematic stroyline which spans 40+ hours. You learn things about the world you are living in, yourself and your fellow characters throughout the game and as far as spells go, the materia system is brilliantly executed and has a major bearing on the central story to the game.

I have managed to get my hands on Final Fantasy VIII for quite cheap so I'll play it once I get a hold of my memory card (my brother has it and my PSOne away on holiday with him!), so I guess all I can add is, they aren't all that bad.
