Probably the one thing that really peeves me off about Sony is that sometimes it seems they have no idea how to get ahead in the “console wars”. I am referring to exclusivity. At least once a week a Ninty comes up to me and starts bragging about things like “We’re going to get Resident Evil”, “We’re going to get Final Fantasy XI”, “We’re going to get SSX” etc. I just brush it off saying “Well, I don’t care because I’ll get it before you” but I know that the PlayStation 2 is losing some customers because some of the great titles can be found elsewhere. I know for certain Gran Turismo is safely locked in the Sony stables but I fear for Hideo Kojima’s latest creation. I know there will be no more Metal Gear Solids but this man is a genius. Sony needs to snap this man up. They must have far much more money than Nintendo yet still we only have a handful of exclusive houses. I know that Sony Studios Liverpool, Soho, Camden and the rest produce some truly excellent titles but they are few and far between and can’t support the PS2 alone.
Development houses such as KCEJ-West and Naughty Dog need to be bound to Sony in order to attract more people to the machine. Sure, Sony owns certain franchises such as ‘Jak and Daxter’ and ‘Lara Croft’ but it’s not enough. They need to be more aggressive. I can see Opus Corporation (behind Wave Riders) going big places but have Sony made the move? I don’t think so.
They need to learn that what people want is exclusivity. Making titles for other platforms may be profitable but they could be killing the PS2 and I’m sure they don’t want that. Some of us look at titles like Perfect Dark and Goldeneye and envy the GameCube. However, Nintys can look at titles such as SSX and FFXI and smile, because they know they’ll get them sooner or later. How many more people would have bought the PS2 if these had been exclusive do you think? I’d say a fair few. I know they can’t do anything about Capcom, Konami etc. but now the GameCube is a viable platform, unlike the N64, we’re seeing a lot more defecting and Sony need to do something about it. Surely it would be more profitable to buy a developer and ensure their games stay with Sony than to let them be a loose cannon. If the PlayStation is ever to be felled, I foresee this will be its downfall and I think Sony should act now before it’s too late. Only then will Sony be unstoppable.
