...MAFIA

I got it today and so far the story has been pretty interesting, but unfortunately, that seems to be the only good thing about it.

Visually it's certainly below average, perhaps even worse than True Crime. The sound effects are okay but not spectacular, the guns sound pretty realistic and the voice acting is good, but the ambient noise and the cars sound quite poor.

Considering the size of the city, they could have made the cars go a little faster than 60 mph, I know these cars are based on models from the 30's, but lets face it, this is a game and people don't want that, as the amount of time you spend getting to certain areas just induces boredom.

Loading times are also extremely long, and everytime you die, you have to sit through yet another loading screen which can peev you off, and this isn't helped by a less than accurate control system. You can adjust the sensitivity of the analogue buttons but even at it's lowest setting, it still feels pretty inaccurate and a little wild.

Unfortunetly the rest of the buttons don't appear to be very rsponsive at all at times. Sometimes when you press the fire button it'll take a good 3 quarters of a second for any kind of reaction, and it's even worse when trying to reload when you're being chased by a group of gangsters.

I don't want to sit here and do a review, but basically it feels that Mafia's only real strong point is it's storyline.

I'm considering taking this game back tommorow and trading it for something else, and then maybe I'll wait for the X-Box version to be released, as this should smooth out the game a little and may improve the gameplay slightly.

So has anyone else got this game and played it for quite a while, and does it get any better when you get bigger guns, better cars etc?

Had it on the PC when it originally came out. Took me about 3 or 4 days, then I sold it on eBay.

Very enjoyable, but absolutely no replay value.

Cheapest I have seen it for on PC is £13 new and a lot of places have actually put the price up now the PS2 version has generated more interest, as they did with the original Matrix DVD when Reloaded came out.

Mafia is like £5/10 on PC, and a half decent PC can run it.

I'll probably opt for the Xbox version.

I've always preferred games like this for consoles (as long as it's a decent transition).

If you have got a half decent PC get it there, the PC version is top quality.

I'll just take it back to the store tomorrow and trade it for something else, I was deciding between Mafia and Viewtuful Joe, so I'll just do a straight swap.

It's a shame really because Mafia certainly had a lot of potential, but the developers are just having a joke. I'll wait until the X-Box version is released and give it a rent to see if there's any improvement.

If the PC version is anything to go by it will take you longer than a couple of days. I think they have cut a bit of content out of the PS2 version though.

The PC version is superb but from what I have seen and read about the PS2 version its an insult to a quality game. A console can not re-create how detailed and impressive the PC version was and thus the developers have considerably lowered the visual quality and have also cut quite a lot of areas out of the game.
