It hides behind stuff. Thats why you get shadows because the dark is hiding I think but dont quote me on it.

When you turn on the lights, darkness is still there, it's just being bombarded with light waves/particles which brightens it up to your eyes.

Toast 'usually' falls buttered side down, because of the imbalance that buttering one side of the toast causes. The buttered side is heavier, therefore has a slighty stronger gravitational attraction to the kitchen floor then the unbuttered side.

Clearly the solution to both problems is to always butter both sides of your toast in the dark.
