Violent games. More and more games that in some way can be described as violent are being released. Why is this?
I remember back when I started gaming there were hardly any, if any, video games that appeared to be violent or contain lots of gore. So why the increase now? Due to advances in technology graphics and gameplay have come a long way in the past twenty years so maybe the increase is due to being able to make these games look and feel realistic enough to make a game out off. Or is it just that society has accepted games like these whereas in the past people would have protested and wanted such games banned.

Studies in to violent games has shown that such games increase the aggression of the person playing them for a short time. It may also cause you to become overal more aggressive in real-life situations. This is why they usually are not suitable for children. These games are given an age rating to prevent children playing them. My personal opinion is these games are fun, like all games should be. But without proper information from parents some children may not realise that these are just meant to be games, and not to be taken to serious.

Maybe its just by chance we have violent games, not sure but probably one developer started it off and people accepted it so others decided to create some of their own. There are lots available to buy at the moment and probaly lots more will come, but will there ever come a time where these games reach the level were they are too violent?
Silent Hill 2 will be released soon and from what I have seen from demos and pictures it looks like a game for adults, with its dark scenery and strange enemies it definately isn't one for children. Also GTA 3 and state of emergence are soon to be released for the PS2, these games encourage you to fight people and to shoot and kill. GTA3 also encourages you to steal cars, deal in drugs and other crimes.
There are also lots more available, like the resident evil series, silent hill, devil may cry. Also beat-em ups like tekken and virtua fighter also encourage fighting. But these games are hugely popular. People love to play them but the reasons why are unknown. I play them as it gives me a chance to do things that i wouldn't do in real life, also you can do these things from the safety of your own home without the dangers of being injured or killed.

Also most of these games are visually very impressive and the gameplay is excelent which is what makes great games. Laws have been introduced in arcades in america to stop children from playing certain games that have people being decapitated, dismembered, mutilated or maimed but you can't stop people playing them in their own home. The reason these games are said to be bad for children is the fact that they are interactive, unlike videos and DVD's you have a certain degree of interaction with the game. You control what happens.
So what do you all think of the future of this genre. How violent will games get? Will a time come where they have to draw the line as its getting too violent? Will we some areas of society wanting such games to be banned. I would like to hear your views.
Thanks

My parents let me watch anything I want. I got RE1 when I was 8 or 9, I can't remember. It's because I'm really used to it and my parents let me use my own judgement. As I am apparently a sensible person ( hard to believe, yes I know ), I should know when too much is enough.
