Violent games. More and more games that in some way can be described as violent are being released. Why is this?
I remember back when I started gaming there were hardly any, if any, video games that appeared to be violent or contain lots of gore. So why the increase now? Due to advances in technology graphics and gameplay have come a long way in the past twenty years so maybe the increase is due to being able to make these games look and feel realistic enough to make a game out off. Or is it just that society has accepted games like these whereas in the past people would have protested and wanted such games banned.

Studies in to violent games has shown that such games increase the aggression of the person playing them for a short time. It may also cause you to become overal more aggressive in real-life situations. This is why they usually are not suitable for children. These games are given an age rating to prevent children playing them. My personal opinion is these games are fun, like all games should be. But without proper information from parents some children may not realise that these are just meant to be games, and not to be taken to serious.

Maybe its just by chance we have violent games, not sure but probably one developer started it off and people accepted it so others decided to create some of their own. There are lots available to buy at the moment and probaly lots more will come, but will there ever come a time where these games reach the level were they are too violent?
Silent Hill 2 will be released soon and from what I have seen from demos and pictures it looks like a game for adults, with its dark scenery and strange enemies it definately isn't one for children. Also GTA 3 and state of emergence are soon to be released for the PS2, these games encourage you to fight people and to shoot and kill. GTA3 also encourages you to steal cars, deal in drugs and other crimes.
There are also lots more available, like the resident evil series, silent hill, devil may cry. Also beat-em ups like tekken and virtua fighter also encourage fighting. But these games are hugely popular. People love to play them but the reasons why are unknown. I play them as it gives me a chance to do things that i wouldn't do in real life, also you can do these things from the safety of your own home without the dangers of being injured or killed.

Also most of these games are visually very impressive and the gameplay is excelent which is what makes great games. Laws have been introduced in arcades in america to stop children from playing certain games that have people being decapitated, dismembered, mutilated or maimed but you can't stop people playing them in their own home. The reason these games are said to be bad for children is the fact that they are interactive, unlike videos and DVD's you have a certain degree of interaction with the game. You control what happens.
So what do you all think of the future of this genre. How violent will games get? Will a time come where they have to draw the line as its getting too violent? Will we some areas of society wanting such games to be banned. I would like to hear your views.
Thanks

Ok, this is my view on this whole "do games/movies/music influence people", and as such is not directed at anybody here or has posted.
Ok? Good, the disclaimer is out of the way, I will continue.

If you are influenced in a negative way, act in a manner that is not acceptable because you saw it in a movie?
You are an idiot.
Pure and simple.

I have had it with these hysterical screamers that want to ban movies or books or games in case they have an effect on people.
These tools that imitate movies and kill people will do so anyway, that game or movie is just a trigger. If it wasn't Doom or Eminem or Natural Born Killers or Brasseye, it would be something else, so shut up and sit down.

Reasonable people do not believe this. Reasonable people are able to distinguish between reality and fiction.

I am sick to death of not being able to watch certain movies or play games because somebody, somewhere, fears that there might be some toeface that will imitate what they have seen.

So what? So what if that person does? Natural selection, means the planet just lost a moron. Big deal.
Look, I'm sorry if you are offended, but I can think for myself, I can choose what I do and how I think or act.

Dont make it harder for me to do what I want, just because we think we have to protect the idiots.
We don't.
Let's stop trying to be accountable for every single person out there ok?
It is not our job to look after the gimps, let them do what they want and let me do what I want.

Silent Hill 2 will be nasty.
Good, I want that. I am an adult and it is nobody's business how I choose to spend my time.
I played that mythical PS game "Thrillkill" when I went to Canada.

And you know what?
It ain't that good. A substandard Mortal Kombat game with the novelty of gruesome death, nothing else.
Boring game.

Like someone else said here, it's just a game. It's just a movie, it's just a tv show.
Shut up, calm down, listen, read and think.
And then maybe, just maybe we can all act like adults and start worrying about the things that matter instead of the details that really have no business with creatures that have reached the top of the food chain.

Thank you for listening.
I feel better now.

It's the only way to face games that are violent - I mean, if you take them seriously, what's to say that therre won't be a few more Half-Life (and others) motivated killers out there, itching to kill someone - or frag.

You must take violent video games with a sense of humour and don’t take them seriously. Violent games can cause serious consequences if taken too seriously. Say somebody who plays a lot of violent games, in the future the graphics will be so lifelike that they might think its normal to go out and shoot somebody in the head.

For now the graphics aren’t that good, well they are but in 10 years we will look back and say “look at those graphics, my mum could make better graphics than that” But at the time those graphics were the best there was. Soon they will retail like suits or something with the game so you can feel the zombies munching on your skin and the recoil of your shotgun will push you back.

When this happens we they better retail a safe game that them make you play afterwards so the zombie munching wont stay in your brain, thus you wont go out shooting people.

Myself, I do enjoy the occasional horror game (ok I love them but hey) I love the zombies screaming or when you are so scared playing the game that any noise sounds like a monster or even when you are so afraid of the dark you sleep with you light on for a month. I live off that. Some people don’t like that but that’s not to worry about. One of the hair rasing moments is while I was playing Resident Evil 2 on the pc at night with nobody in the house when you go into that room with the magic mirror and that licker thing jumps through the glass and start attacking you!. I also like playing system shock 2, this game is so scary. When the lights go out for the first time the pumping music comes on with a warning from the intercom saying something like “Movements detected in sector 23Z1 muffle muffle muffle” then a red flashing siren starts and zombies start jumping at you with their groaning. I had to stop playing this game, I was so scared that I moved around the house checking all the locks and such. Man that was scary.

Horror games must not be taking so badly. Its only a game, remember only a game.

Let's face it, games will get more violent as long as society does, and unless some peace god comes out and reforms the world into a tranquil one, then games will continue to be made with the prescence of violence in them. Hmmm, that wasn't clear, was it?

If one person is affeced by one thing does that mean everyone else has to suffer "just incase" i surely hope not.

keep the 18 certificate on the games and then adults won't suffer!!!!!!!!!

Ok that sounds fair but there are alot of people like you whos parents let them decide what games they want to play and buy. But are the parents educated enough to make these decisions? In the states alot of people blame gaming for incidents which children take guns to school and shoot people. Surely the parents should take a part of the blame by allowing their children to play such games.

Doom was the first game that I played that was really violent. I played it when it was released and I was younger than the recomended age. It hasn't affected me much at all, just makes me want to play more games like it. Does anyone take the certificates on games serious? I know plenty of shops who don't care what age you are, you can buy any game you want. Just out of interest, do special reserve check before selling the game? Are any warnings given?
