My Socket A motherboards says, in the manual, that I can have a Duron 750 in there (which I have), or an Athlon 1000. So I wouldn't be able to run an Athlon 1100 in there?

Thanks for all the help. I never realised windows 2000 was so good. It makes me wonder why Microsoft don't advertise it more towards Mr. Average Punter seeing as it's quite a good all-round Operating System.

I've been running win2k for months on here, and never had a problem with any recent games. Even most of my older ones run fine, several of them have patches available to add win2k support.

Win2k isnt all that good for games. I would suggest dual booting between win2k adn windows ME. I know that ME is usless for applications but if you just use it for games then it is fine and win2k is brill for everything else.

Waaaaaaaaaa! I knew about W98 not supporting dual processor but only using 256Mb!!!!!!! Man, I've got 384Mb, what a damn waste. Looks like I'd better go get Windows 2000. Can I still run all my existing programs on it like all my games etc?

Just thought i'd mention that win98 cannot handle dual proccessor or maore RAM then 128! If you put more RAM in it just won't use it (although I think i can use 256 in SE). Use win 2k if you are going dual procssor alough it is not good for gaming.

kingklik Go to the homepage for your motherboard, And find the Bios updates for your model of motherboard. You might find a update to support faster CPUs.
Most socket A motherboards can be updated to take 1.2GB CPUs
or faster.

Yeah..my 98 box didn't crash with it so much as have it spontaneously close for no apparent reason..lost loads of work like that.

Actually, my Win98 system is pretty stable. I reckon about 3 crashes using max, during the 6 months I've had it is quite good going.

Yes, the 3DS max range takes advantage of dual processors - almost all 3d/CAD programs do. Make sure you're running win2k though...you should be if you're running an intensive app like that, win9x has a nasty habit of just falling over on itself.
