As most of you with your heads set firmly in the gaming world should know, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a big part of todays games.

Companies are forever trying to improve the quality of AI in their games. What is there ultimate goal? To make the AI more human!

Well, the more I've thought about it, the more I've realised that this could be a big ol' waste of time! I am fairly sure that AI could never surpass the level of a human being. Seeing as it's taken a human mind to build it, how could it possibly know more than its creator?

Even if it were possible to surpass the human mind, would this artificial "super brain" have a place in the gaming industry? Personally, I think not. The point of games is they are supposed to be hard, challenging, but ultimately they must be possible to overcome, otherwise people would have no choice but to give up completely.

If a computer can out think man, predict his every move and become an undefeatable foe in the games world who would play? If you actually CAN'T win, then whats the point?

This is an eventuality that will no doubt never come to fruition. The ultimate goal is to make the computer think on the same level as man.

However, as companies try to create drivers that think like men, fighters that think like men, sportsmen that think like men, etc. A superb alternative is creeping into the gaming world that will achieve this level of thought instantly.

The alternative I speak of is, of course, on line gaming!

After all what thinks more like man than man?

Before long, the technology will be there to have all characters within; Fighting games, FPS, Racers, Sports sims, etc, being driven by the minds of people from all over the world.

AI will hardly be needed, I'm sure there'll still be a place for it somewhere, but the future of gaming lies in on-line experiences, not in the development of AI!

So why do companies persist in developing AI when it could very soon become a thing of the past?

After all, what would you rather pit your wits against; man or machine?

Thanks for reading/ skipping to the last line and insulting my intelligence!

AI will never die. It is what makes games. Every game you can think of has AI in it. Ok maybe Tetris for Gameboy dosen't but that don't matter.

Online gameing will not take of in consoles for a long while because it costs to much at the moment, It is slow and it clogs up your phone line if you only have one.

Leave it for 10 years when everyone will have free internet all day and cable is so so so cheap. Then things will look good. Sadly we will all be in our early/late 20's or early/late 30's. And some old buggers will be 40/50 ;)

Ok, so maybe AI isn't on the way out just yet.

All I'm trying to sat is that I (personally) would prefer a gaming world where ALL characters are being run by humans.

Thats just me. I also think that this is a possibility in the forseeable future.

I don't like the idea of AI, it unnerves me. Just like nuns!

Damn, saw through my cunning plan again!

Anyway. I disagree, despite some people's best efforts gaming is still just as much a solo sport as it ever was. Multiplayer games are often played on one console and one tv screen around a mate's house or on the internet, but with slow connections still (not me for long!) and lack of anything resembling a stable multi-user system, computer based AI is here to stay.

AI will become "better" and more widely used in the future, without a doubt. At the moment AI is pretty rubbish for one reason and one reason only - running AI algorithms is a CPU intestine task and at the moment this is struggling enough to cope with the huge gaming worlds and fantastical graphics demanded. As photo realistic graphics become de rigueur, processing power will still increase. Creating more realistic AI will use this “spare” power.

Yes, humans are usually the best opponents, but not always. There is a market in Death Match style games for bot play so that when you are by yourself you can still be playing against worthy opponents. In MMORGPs, to name one genre, the "baddies" are still computer generated characters, even though your playing on line. They would obviously benefit from increased AI - they could co-ordinate attacks or just basically move and react more realistically.

Also, I can see computer controlled AI character policing the on line gaming community - be it aiding new players in getting their feet or searching out bugs in the game. Even simply handing out missions or selling weapons to players with half way life like dialogue generated on-the-fly, maybe with a little advice. Will being able to have a two-way conversation through your keyboard and modem with a computer generated character ever become reality? Who knows, would be pretty cool though!

How about Conflict Zone, on the PC at the mo but coming to PS2 in a more advanced form? That game learns from your actions and develops tactics. That's exactly like a real enemy would in real life, but not as another human player would. Sure, your human opponent would adapt, but not realisticly as a General might adapt. That's where AI comes in.

Yes, I'd like to see a big push in online gaming, but it just aint gonna happen, kid.

Sorry Turbo, but I would still prefer to see a big push in online gaming than I would AI.

You don't *have* to have broadband to be able to play games well over the 'net. I played a but of UT last night over my 56k modem, I had a ping of around 150 and it was very playable, I just lost because I was crap.

I can see what Tarrant is saying, and I can also see what Turbo is saying.

I agree with Tarrant in that AI can't get any better than a person playing already. But the thing is, do we want AI to get anywhere near that good? How frustrating would it be if whenever you played Ut, Q3A etc, the 'bot always managed to turn around, and sniper you straight in the head, first time, every time.

Very frustrating.

So we want games to be on our own level. But chances are, if you go online with UT, you'll lose. I used to play it (UT) quite a bit. Last year at university we had a LAN and cable modem in our house, so it got quite a bit of use. But I hadn't played for about 6 months, I had a game last night and was utter rubbish.

Because of the fact that everyone is different, we are seeign games with no definate difficulty level. Max Payne has its "auto difficulty adjust" thingy, so if you're really good, the bad guys get harder and more accurate, if you're rubbish, the bad guys can't can't hit the ground, let alone you.

So I personally think that developers should work on AI and getting the multiplayer side of things spot on as well. That way the player gets the choice of what they want to do.

I disagree.

It's sometimes hard to find worthy opponents on the Internet, and then there's the question of availability.

I think there's about 5% of homes that can actually get broadband in Britain, and this situation isn't going to improve any time soon. BT are up to their eyeballs in debt, and they aren't in a hurry. OFTEL's a useless pile of crap and NTL/Telewest are doing their best but they can't work miracles. It'll be 2020 before this broadband age arrives, and there'll still be lag and it'll cost money.

Giving up on AI is alianating users who can't afford the Internet. Only a third of people in Britain have 56k, let alone broadband.

So, do you think developers should give up on AI now? Thought not.
