Companies are forever trying to improve the quality of AI in their games. What is there ultimate goal? To make the AI more human!
Well, the more I've thought about it, the more I've realised that this could be a big ol' waste of time! I am fairly sure that AI could never surpass the level of a human being. Seeing as it's taken a human mind to build it, how could it possibly know more than its creator?
Even if it were possible to surpass the human mind, would this artificial "super brain" have a place in the gaming industry? Personally, I think not. The point of games is they are supposed to be hard, challenging, but ultimately they must be possible to overcome, otherwise people would have no choice but to give up completely.
If a computer can out think man, predict his every move and become an undefeatable foe in the games world who would play? If you actually CAN'T win, then whats the point?
This is an eventuality that will no doubt never come to fruition. The ultimate goal is to make the computer think on the same level as man.
However, as companies try to create drivers that think like men, fighters that think like men, sportsmen that think like men, etc. A superb alternative is creeping into the gaming world that will achieve this level of thought instantly.
The alternative I speak of is, of course, on line gaming!
After all what thinks more like man than man?
Before long, the technology will be there to have all characters within; Fighting games, FPS, Racers, Sports sims, etc, being driven by the minds of people from all over the world.
AI will hardly be needed, I'm sure there'll still be a place for it somewhere, but the future of gaming lies in on-line experiences, not in the development of AI!
So why do companies persist in developing AI when it could very soon become a thing of the past?
After all, what would you rather pit your wits against; man or machine?

Impossible odds, all characters thinking like (because they are) humans, everyman for himself, take as many people out before you eventually get pegged.
"Die Trying" - keep an eye out for this fine on-line FPS, coming in the distant future from 'Tarrant Enterprises'
But yes, I agree that some games would benefit from human characters rather that AI controlled.
Can you image a football game with 22 human characters though?
Each player beliving that he is Pele, and can take all of the other players on!
Mind you, you could always play those playground football games, like Wembley, and Heads and Volleys.
What would be cool if you could play a game like Goldeneye on line, with human controlled henchmen.
But if everyone you came across was a human player, it would be awfully difficult to beat more than a couple of them, before they eventually wore you down.
But you could always give the bad guys less energy.
It would be fun to try to shoot James Bond.

I'm all for beating these challenges, but I also like to know just how good I am at a game on a global level. I think on-line gaming is a much better way of doing this than comparing scores.
Mainly in games were you are a team of one (FPS, Driving games, etc.). It wouldn't work on like a football game or something. But I like the idea of being one of 22 human controlled characters in a sports sim. (though it might be a tad boring for goal keepers).
I'm not saying AI should be abandoned completely, nor am I saying that we'll all be playing online without the aid of AI anytime soon (though topic title could be misleading. whoops).
I'd just like to see all players being human in the future. The random element of crazy humans would be difficult to mimic using AI.

Anyway, I don't believe that all enemies in a game could ever be played by human characters. It just wouldn't be possible, so you'll still need AI.
Internet access will ALWAYS cost money. There is no way it can be free, given the value of the kit it costs to run it, the man hours put in to maintain it, the planning, and all sorts of other factors.
It was believed, for a short time, that advertising could fund the net. This has been proved to be false, with many dot coms failing.
Whilst it will cost to play online, the casual gamer will not be quick to convert.
Developers are best to continue to seek improvements in AI. Max Payne is a real milestone, given it's ability to scale down to your level. This kind of this will draw the player in, and will enjoy the game more, as they won't be hit with a sudden wall of difficulty.
Online gaming doesn't really interest me. I'd rather play at home, with friends, taking on computer controlled enemies together, or knocking chunks out of each other!
Games should always offer a single player option, because I love the thrill of pitting myself against the game, and beating it.
Even Mario Party 2 had a single player game. And it was well worth playing too, as by completing it you unlocked other secrets, and games.
AI won't die.
Online gaming isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Though maybe that's just me. I don't see the point of beating strangers.
Of course, using an online gaming network to take on someone I know, but is far away - that could be fun.
But still, AI is the future.
