They say 'You learn something new every day'. Well, I thought I'd start a new thread of useful (useless?) information you might not have known. Feel free to add your own (as long as they are interesting).

Mobile Phones and Petrol Stations
---------------------------------
Despite the huge signs and angry petrol pump attendents, it's actually never been scientifically proved that a mobile signal could set off a fire in a petrol station. In fact, all electrical devices have to meet certain standards and creating a spark of sufficent amounts to ignite petrol fumes would usually mean you need to chuck your mobile away immediately.

There have never been any verified cases that I could find where this has actually happened, either. Which either shows that it's not possible, or that people don't talk on the phone while filling their cars.

That said, I've been told by Tesco staff that they have a health and safety video with an incident of someone using their phone and causing a fire, but this is more than likely a mock up.

Ring a Ring a Roses.
--------------------
Despite popular belief, this old nursery rhyme is not connected with the Black Death (Plague). The rhyme hasn't actually been around long enough to have been created at the time and the several original versions were not as easy to connect to the plague details as they are now.

However, it's just possible that the modern version could have been created by some creative minded children who had just finished a history lesson before entering the playground...

Only in relation to it's size.

That's a myth.

Just wondering, if anyone can answer:

Are flies epileptic? They seem to become mesmorised by bright light.

When it's said "for pleasure" it actually means "with no intention of getting the female pregnant", i.e. a dog enjoys humping but won't stop at the 'right' moment.

But a lion!

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.

A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes.

A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death.

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.

The male pray mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off.

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field.

Some lions mate over 50 times a day.

Butterflies taste with their feet.

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.

A cat's urine glows under a black light.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

Starfish have no brains.

Polar bears are left-handed.

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.
