Today I awoke early in the day and was greeted with a typical Scottish day... cloudy and raining. My friends and I had already deceided to delay our outing to Glasgow till the following day so I thought why not do bog all for the rest of the day and thats exactly what I have done. I got my video's out and it hit me like a bag of cheese - I was going to watch the 'Back to the Future trilogy'. Hurrah I said to myself and I gathered food from the kitchen and set up the video and prepared to watch one of my all time favourite films that I had not seen for years.

So I watch the first one all the memories of my childhood coming back to me, of how I wanted to be Marty McFly and use a hoverboard. So the second one comes and to cut a long story short there is a scene in which is set in 2015 in a 80's theme bar. (BTTF II was made in 1989). Anyway there is an old arcade machine which funnily enough is a late 80's machine in which the Marty McFly is good at so he shows the children who are trying to turn it on. (script from memory).

* 80's theme bar *

Marty McFly looks over at corner as he recognising the old arcade machine... kids trying to turn it on.

Kids: My dad told me about these... hey I got it working, how do you use it?

Marty McFly: Hey I'll show you

Lifts up pink platic gun and shoots moving cowboys.
Smiles as he is good at it.
Kids looked on disapointed

Kids: YOU MEAN YOU USE YOUR HANDS? Thats a babie's toy.

So there is the gaming connection you were not expecting to happen and on The Future of Gaming subject about a film that involves the future AND gaming what a result :D.

Ah so here we go. That film was made in 1989, some time ago I suppose. So in 1989 they expected at least by 2015 we would have stopped physically playing games and play them mentally in the future... I know that because I read an interview a while ago with the producers who said thats what they meant. So 12 years later we have not really come that far in gaming... we still use the pink plastic guns in arcade games, although we have came a long way for personal gaming technology etc.

So do you think in 14 years time we will be able to control games with our minds and children won't know what an old arcade game with pink guns is? Hmmmm I very much doubt it and on a non-gaming subject have hoverboards and hovercars.

So the future eh? We can predict what we like but really our predictions for the future are not much different to the predictions by the makes of BTTF 12 years ago. So you think 25 years into the future and its all yeah super 5D and special super gaming stuff well thats what those prducers thought then and nothing much has changed so unless in next few years there is a magical new breakthrough things will remain dormant :D.

So there you go another 'Future of Gaming' post with I hope a nice interesting story for you :). Think I'll go back to Indiana Jones next and see if there are any references to gaming in that.

Thanks for reading, your friend in time Sheepy.

That is an interesting thought! If you used something as powerful as a futuristic VR machine where you kinda go into an REM sleep, it would be kinda like that!!

Also, if anyone has ever read Demons don't dream, he focuses his mind on his game screen and goes into a kind of state of mind and he doesn't use his hands but his mind, and makes it look as if he is in the game with the game environments all around him!

What the hell are you talking about kid? Of course you have to use your hands. What else did you think you could use? Your hands? I don't think so.

I do know what your saying about us controlling games with our minds, it won't happen for a long time though.
