Hmm blu-ray discs eh? Sounds interesting and that 25GB of space on the single layered disc will allow Kojima to put in all the movies he likes in his games (like we need anymore). Probably also an attempt to stop piracy seeing as i don't know many people with a blu-ray disc rewriter. Give it a few years by the time the PS3 actually does come out and if it is using these discs there'll probably be a ton of rewriters already out on the market.

Just hope for Sony's sake that they are easy to program on otherwise i can see developers shifting over to nintendo or microsoft.

Don't worry, where there's a will, there's a family feud.

Even the N64 had copies.

Good point indeed. Had not even thought about that.

And it would also make sense that Sony would use that media as they are already using it in the PSX as you say.

And yes, that would certainly be a secure media to use in terms of piracy.

Sony may be planning to use a larger UMD system. The PSP is utilising this format, I reckon the PS3 would benefit from a larger system, to vastly cut down on piracy. How many people have a UMD writer eh?

Hmm if they are going to use DVD as the standard for the PS3, then Sony are going to have to come up with a damn good copy protection system - as copying a DVD now is easy, and most new computers ship with a DVD writer. By the time the PS3 hits retail everyone and their dog will have a DVD writer.

Okay, you could argue that at this point you can't do a 1:1 copy a DVD9 game (Xenosaga for example), but this is only a limitation of the current crop of DVD writers, not the mod chips. When DVD9 capable writers come to market, they will be as easy as a DVD5 to copy.

Sony should really be looking at some kinda’ of modified DVD9-based media, This would give them the advantages - like space (9Gig) and cheap unit price, but would mean that copying them would not be as simple as a standard DVD. Both Dreamcast and Xbox have used this idea to good effect as copying a game from these consoles is possible, but its far from being as simple as doing a 1:1 copy with a DVD writer.

Sony should look at what Nintendo have done with the protection of the GC (mini DVDs with custom barcode protection) as this is by far the best and most secure copy protection ever used for software. Even now it's very tough, and a long-winded process to get a copy of a GC game running on the machine.

Blu-Ray is an option, but as mentioned, why on earth would they need 25Gig of space, and again, unless it was some kind of modded Blu-Ray then once capable writers hit the market it'll be the PS2 situation all over again. Yes a Blu-Ray writer costs £1000s now, but come the end of 2005 (start of 2006), when the PS3 is going to ship, they'll be allot cheaper and more available.

While piracy actually helped to establish the original PlayStation in the market place by meaning much higher sales of the base unit because everyone knew they could get copied games, Sony are no longer in this situation. They are now market leaders, so i would imagine that after the large dev costs of the Cell chip (and the PS3 as a whole) their primary goal will be to recoup as much cash as possible through game sales.

And to do this, they need a good copy protection system.

For the record, i think they will go with Blu-Ray - simply because they'll want to push the format and there is no better way to do so that using it in a console which will sell by the million. Although I can't decide if they'll use it straight or modded for extra piracy control.

Hope not ;-)

it could mean more aesthetically pleasing games, that are longer and bigger which is obviously a huge plus...

however, it may mean that it takes longer for games companies to make the games though...

i guess it has to be a good thing :|

In terms of gaming the only thing I can really envisage is more loading times (unless the PS3 has a bigger and better 'buffer' system for all this extra information) or more movie sequences in games (because they now have more space available on the media to cram them in) which would mean... yup, more loading times during games. Unless the PS3 comes with a hard drive of course so that it can buffer 10GB movie sequences whilst you're playing the game itself.

Might need to be quite a big hard drive though.

Personally I don't see Blu-ray Disc technology for the PS3 as an announcement like this so late in the day seems a little strange considering the PS3 has been in development for quite a few years already. I expect it'll still use DVD media and then the PS4 will get the new BD technology, maybe with Bluetooth at the same time.

Aren't today's games epic enough as they are? I mean just because the media can hold more information, does that necessarily equate to better games?

Yup the double layered ones are meant to hold that much space. Course the biggest file i've seen on a PS2 game was 9GB and that was Xenosaga so i don't really see the need for a 25 GB disc. Unless it means stuff like cities 2-5 times the size of the whole of a GTA3 city or something

Blu ray is a format thats been spoken off for quite a while now.
11 companies got together to produce it (Hitachi, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson) and its set to replace the CD and DVD format in the not too distant future.

http://www.blu-ray.com/info/ for more info on the blu ray medium.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was used, more capacity means more content on the disk which can't be a bad thing.

Going by the average DVD capacity and also the GC disk capacity it seems that the huge capacity (Some blu ray disks reported to store around 50GB) you have to think though just how many games in the time the PS3 is out would really require so much space...

Still as long as they are cheap enough not to bump up game prices or the console price then I don't see there being much of an issue for most gamers.
