We have seen many arcade style speed boat racing games in the past but many have had limited modes, well if you want something slightly different try hydro thunder for the good old dreamcast. Itís an arcade game with some creative new types of play and cool slick boats to have a go with. Unlike some speedboat games this one actually gives you power ups and some turbo boost jumps to give you that extra edge in the game.
Hydro thunder lets you race around 14 far-fetched tracks with different twists, turns and power boosts. There are a few bonus tracks, which if you beat will enable you to use the bonus boats, which are fantastic. My favourite bonus track has to be the Nile adventure because as you can guess you race through the Nile but also have a trip through pyramids, and some cool mummy tombs but it is one of the hardest too, but I wont say anymore.
The game offers you 13 cool boats, all unique in there own way and all handle and look differently which will give you some boats that you favour to some others. Also there are some bonus boats, which you will unlock through out the game.
The gameplay is good but not as smooth as it could have been, and sometimes gets a bit annoying. If you pick an easy boat then you should be fine but some of the hard boats arenít worth even touching. But in general I like the gameplay and arcade racers like this are cool to handle and look at.
Speaking of looks the game isÖ pleasant but doesnít exactly push the Dreamcastís capabilities to the limits, but looks quality enough to me anyway so I havenít got any complaints really. Now the sound is again average but doesnít boast anything a great deal. The engines are a bit quirky and the back round noise is pretty cool, but if you donít like it there is always the volume control.
Overall the game is really enjoyable and entertaining so my advice to a dreamcast owner who loves arcade games is to go and pick up a copy, heck SR have it for about £7 so get it now. The gameplay, graphics and sound are all decent for an early dc game such as this and I will give it 80%.
