Why did Sega change DR. Robotnik to DR. Eggman? I prefer the old way.

I thopught that Robotnik was Eggman's grandfather, thats what I read on a website about Sonic ages ago, when looking for a walkthrough guide, lol, you have reminded me with this post to complete the last thing, after completeing hero and dark sories!

Dr. Eggman is how it is in Japan. To America it's Dr. Robotnik.

didn't they say something in sonic adventure to batle like "Dr eggman is Dr robotnick's cousin who was killed and now he is carrying out his evil schemes that he didnt complete"?
Or some really rubish tie in line like that which linked sonic back with his old quests.
