At last... some sign of ol' Mr. Scrooge spending a bit of money.

Nintendo are famed for hauling money, bar the Q fund they rarely spend masses ammount of money. Most of the profits from Pokemon and the sale of Rareware have been hidden from view... in fact Nintendo are VERY reluctant to spend their money. Which is why fear of them falling is very premature.

But Nintendo have reported their desire to aquire key technologies for the future. This doesn't mean odd final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid deals... this means the aquisiton of ENTIRE companies.

Hardware AND software companies. So troubled developers like Capcom could well be under Nintendo's gaze.

Either way we should see the fruits of Nintendo's fight back occur in the next few months.

Go to the Retro Studio's website, it gave me hope that they could. Although they need to develop a few more titles.

You should know by now that no matter how technically proficient they are, NO ONE can replace Rare.

No devellopment team will ever put as much diversity and character as Rare did into their games, although Sega come VERY close...

I want to know who has been making the reported 30 DS games that are going to be on show.. they aren't all going to have been made in-house. Would be so great if Retro, Silicon Knights etc. have been making them for ages now in secret. Maybe Hudson too.. they need to have a break from just making a Mario Party every year (no.6 is out this Christmas!).

Nevertheless, "The Rare of America" could have been truly great asset to Microsoft or Sony.

Heh, if only everything was simple as that; fact is, before Nintendo intervened by cancelling Retro's other titles and concentrating on MP, their games were highly wasteful in a time:productivity ratio. There's no doubt the quality of the games they had in devlopment were good; they had even almost finished two of them.

But Nintendo had to cancel the titles in order to completely focus on production for their game, and in order to catch up with their targeted release date. They sacked most of their workforce not only because they just cancelled the rest of their games, but also to rip out the jobs (mostly from management in Retro) that was wasting time on game production. What was left was the people working on MP and some artists and coders from the other projects.

Right from the start they were developing high class games, with fantastic premises and ideas.

Nintendo bought shares and gave them the Metroid License.

The game was too "western" for Nintendo's tastes and they were not happy about how things were going.

Nintendo cancelled their other 3 titles, sacked 2/3rds of the development house and moved EAD in to help with Metroid.

Metroid turned out to be one of Gamecube's best games.

Leaving Retro small but very powerful.

Yeah, but you said:

Right from the start, it was a well known fact they were disorganised and out of sync with each other. How could any business, let alone software house be one of the worlds biggest third party developers if they can't even organise themselves into a successful productive state?

Nintendo owned a share in Retro as soon as the company came about... they later bought them out.
