So, we can hook consoles up to widesreen TV's. Woah! They look really big. There is 'touch' interaction with the dualshock system.

But what i want to know is how many games are actually 'compatible' with surround sound? Obviously, any game can be played with the surround sound, but are there any games that actually use it?

Games I would like to see use it are survival horrors like Resident Evil. All of a sudden, you hear a sound behind you. You spin round, see a zombie, and with seconds to spare pull the trigger on your shotgun!

Any comments?

Optical output is for DD5.1/DTS output only - not video.

Ah, but check the times... I was typing mine as you were typing yours!

Maybe I should have said "it's there for those who want TO USE it" - including developers.

The PS2 has a digi out with can be plauged up to 5:1 digital but apart from the DVD's nothing supports this.

Final Fantasy X is supposed to be the first game in 5:1

I have a subwoofer and 8 speakers and it may be only in stereo but with the kick from every bass sound on the sub and big speakers it's still fanastic.

If other consoles dont, you just plug the scart lead into a VCR and tune the VCR into your cinsole. To tune your console into your VCR, you just plug the cable in to the aerial slot.

Surround sound is a great feature for consoles, I am lucky because I have a surround sound HI-FI in my bedroom and am able to play games on my Playstation and N64 on surround sound. All you need is a simple AUX scart lead that can connect from your HI-FI to Playstation or any other console.
Having 5 speakers on my HI-FI is truly great, It feels as if your in the game!

Dolby surround can come from a Stereo signal, and there are games (Need for Speed III springs to mind) that do output a dolby surround signal. This, of course, involves pluging two phono leads into your surround set up from the console (either from the two phono outputs or a Scart lead with phono leads attached) I believe there were a fair few PS1 titles that are Dolby Surround enabled and some Saturn and N64 ones too if I remember correctly. I can try it out when I get home, as all my consoles are now connected to the surround system via the TV.

As for the PS2, yes it can supply a Dolby 5.1 output via a seperate decoder, good news if you have one, but it's a bit expensive if you don't.

One word: LUCKY!

PS, I take it you are an adult? Cor, I'm 14, I'd love to have a widescreen and SS in my room. Unfortunatley, I cant have my Ps2 in the front room - not enough time with parents watching TV :(

Most if not all DVD's have surround sound which works a treat through the PS2. There are only a few games that use surround sound but as its becoming more popular more developers are begining to add the option to their games. I have my PS2 connected to a 32" widescreen tv and the optical output from my PS2 is plugged into a dolby 5.1 home cinema system, it sounds so great.
