hype can be both your friend and your enemy.
we hear that a game is going to have the best graphics, fastest loading times etc etc etc.we get all excited, buy magazines for previews and then reviews, talk about it for months, count down the days till its out then...
were let down, like we have been so many times before.
its not just games, its films, books,tv shows and more.
the worst thing is,as long as were intrested in something we will never get rid of hype.
and will fall for it every time.
Hype has a dramatic effect on games, consoles, films, pretty much everything.
With games, you'll get hype over the graphics, that they are the best ever seen ever, and that the gameplay will be unmatched. The hype over games can last for a long time, like the hype over MGS2. New demos showing new footage from the game, and new shots of the game, and the headlines,'This will be the best game ever'.
It's the same with new consoles as well, although on a larger scale than games.
There was a lot of hype over the Dreamcast before it came out. Shots showing the games and how good that they were and the VMU, where to can download mini games from the game itself, certainly gave magazines a lot to talk about.
The hype over the PS2 was quite phenomenal. There was tonnes of hype over the games, especially games such as GT3 and MGS2, but GT3 has only just been released, and MGS2 is still a long way off.
The hype surrounding the two new 128-bit consoles, Xbox and Gamecube, is also quite huge. The hype surrounding the Gamecube has Nintendo fans wetting their pants with anticipation, and there is just as much fuss over the Xbox, which is set to be the most powerful consoles, but whether it turns out to be the most successful remains to be seen.
The main problem with hype is that it is not always justified. The hype over a games could be really big, like the Bouncer on the PS2 for example, but when it was finally released, the games just didn't live up to all of the hype, and was basically just FMV with some controllable fight scenes thrown in. Very disappointing.
Of course, the hype can be justified, like with GT3 or Perfect Dark.
But it is disappointing when, due to all of the hype, you go and by the games, and it turns out to be very bad and disappointing.
The main culprits for hype: magazines and the internet. The hype just builds up and up. Headlines like,'The best thing ever', and,' nothing will match this'. It makes the games (or films etc, what ever you care to think of)looks and sound really good, but turn out to be pants. The hype could turn out to be justified as I have already said, but when it isn't, its just, well, disappointing to say the least.
