Well for many of us PCs are our main games machines, yet to play the latest games we keep having to buy the latest graphics cards, and of course make sure our cpu's are up to the job. This has until now been acceptable to most, however some of us obviously can’t justify these seemingly increasing expenses for only minor improvements. Whereas before PCs became so mainstream PCs were seen as an investment because of the software applications they can run such as wordprocessors and web browsers, nowadays the PC cant offer us much more than what our old PCs already can and so the consoles are starting to rule the roost.
In spite of the slow down in desktop PC sales, sales of laptops are still increasing indicating that the public as a whole are now more interested in style and portability than how many MHz the processors in their machines are. The Playstation2 will soon get a harddrive and a modem allowing users to get online quickly without having to go through the hassle of getting their PC online. Plus the Playstation 2 is cheap enough so that one could be bought for every room in the house that has a TV in it. The Xbox from Microsoft will soon be on sale in the US, and will be here in March next year and Microsoft also dreams of people having more than one Xbox per household, at best one per TV set.
The Xbox will offer a cheap solution for people who want to play top quality games, and get online without having to shell out for new hardware every 6 months. Does this mean the end of PC gaming?? Possibly not after all the Xbox is basically a top end PC in a small box, so one would expect the PC to get games ported from the Xbox. After all whose going to spend £200 on a graphics card when for £300 you can get an Xbox that will have great games coming out for it for the next 5 years??
The Desktop PC and the Console world are about to merge, and the battle will heat up this November. Hopefully the victors in this will be us, the gaming public.
Hopefully the games can only get better as a result. : - )
Remember when you walked into a computer shop. What did you see? Loads of top titles in big boxes with lots of pictures and information about the game. Now on the other hand it’s all in smaller very smart, PS2 look-a -like, boxes. Do you have any idea why they did that? Well the answer is simple, so they would fit in with all the rest of the console games. Well personally I think that’s pretty upsetting as computers are in a world of there own when it comes to graphics and speedy processors. Really the first console that has a computer-like spec is the PS2 believe it or not, but none of the games have caught up and produced a game using all the space up on the graphics card.
P.C gaming has for sure gone through a rough patch, especially when the PS2 came out, and I alone know two people who were complete computer gaming buffs and now they spend all their time on their newly brought console (PS2). I was also quite surprised when after I brought my Dreamcast, to find a label saying ‘compatible with Windows CE’ this was amazing. Finally the top game producers had found the perfect desktop program that they now call ‘Windows.’ With links between computer and console the options are endless forget GT3 graphics, let’s carry out the producer’s dream. ‘I want F1 racers to learn the trade by playing Gran Tourismo’ Now it may sound a bit ambitious, but it could happen if computer clever clogs teamed up with the top gaming programmers ever. You see the options.
I don’t think that the computer will ever be the best machine to play games on, but I think it will stay in the top for a long time to come. I also think that soon console will have a link via the P.C so they can use the processor and get faster gaming or maybe use that use that 56k modem, please. So can you now see what changes the computer could go through, so don’t even think of selling that computer for a new console!
And any way computers rule.
it's in china!!!
and actually it's one of the more expensive parts of china too...but that's cos it was under the british for some time
well it's basically uk ripping us poor people off...
for starters you can get the top model of the dell desktop (something like p4 1.7ghz, 256mb ram etc...basically what we have in the uk) for 800 pounds...that's how cheap it is...how much would you have to pay over in uk -may 1,500 -2000....
as for ram...if you aren't looking for SDram or RDram...you can get 128mb ram for 8 pounds (and this is not crappy type of ram either)....sigh why does uk have to be so expensive :(
What the PC I think needs for gaming to become the greatest gaming facility is an innovative control system.
Just maybe one type of controller that works for every game, like on a console!! But still have stuff like steering wheels etc.
Persoanlly i'm looking forward to the next year or so for the PC, there are some excellent titles coming out, Max Payne (out tomorrow), Return to Wolfenstein, Medal of Honour, Duke Nukem forever and of course Halo.
The problem with a PC is of course the upgrading malarky, very expensive.......but getting cheaper.
Take Memory prices now? £30 for 128mb of SDRAM, i remember paying £100 for it a year or so ago. Hard drives are also the cheaper product at the moment with 40Gb for 90 quid.......what was that a year ago?
The only stick in the mud is the CPU's, motherboards seem to be priced OK......but could be better, but CPU's tend to be the pricey thing that put alot of people off.
The only company that seems to be giving value for money is AMD with their Athlons plumeting down in price, mainly because of the newer chip coming out but still great value.
I think if prices where more lower then the PC community would get bigger and certainly benefit us with more quality games coming out to use the higher CPU speed, because alot more people would have higher speeds if the things were cheaper!
So the end of PC Gaming, I don't think so for a few years, we might see a compromise between the PC and the XBox, but for now there are alot of quality games to look forward to............thats if you have the power!
