....I'm out of practice at this. It doesn't feel right.
Graphics seems a good place to start with racing games. I promise I won't mention gameplay either, other than for the purposes of informing you that I'm not going to mention it.
Graphics. I'm not going to argue about what they add, or don't, or whether they need to be good. Just what I think of them. Hopefully I'll have though of something else to write about by then, too.
Grpahics. Better get started this time. Need a good opening sentence.
I don't think they're all that great.
Sure, they seem to look good - but they don't look right (Imagine that word in italics, for correct interpretation of the emphasis.)
The cars glide along very nicely, just like they have been doing for the last few years on these racing games, and the scenery gets more detialed, sharper, and suffers less pop up than before, but it's not right.
Cars don't glide like that. They don't have perfectly gleaming paintwork. If you're going to make a realistic racing game, at least make it realistc, yes?
The scenery is there, but it's not alive. Why aren't the trees blowing in the wind? Why is the grass so static? Why is everything so perfect - unflawed and evenly spread? Why can't I see the clouds moving across the sky, or maybe partially covering up the sun. I want to see shadows fade and reappear, I want to see the birds flying in the sky, and the people by the sides of the road moving, talking - doing something other than standing there like plasticine models. I want to be suprised and interested with what I see.
The graphics are improving, but they aren't getting any more realistic.
That seems a good line to end a topic on. A whole topic on racing games without the mention of racing, or in fact, anything other than graphics. Hmmm.
Never mind. Maybe I'll get it right next time......
