....I'm out of practice at this. It doesn't feel right.
Graphics seems a good place to start with racing games. I promise I won't mention gameplay either, other than for the purposes of informing you that I'm not going to mention it.
Graphics. I'm not going to argue about what they add, or don't, or whether they need to be good. Just what I think of them. Hopefully I'll have though of something else to write about by then, too.
Grpahics. Better get started this time. Need a good opening sentence.
I don't think they're all that great.
Sure, they seem to look good - but they don't look right (Imagine that word in italics, for correct interpretation of the emphasis.)
The cars glide along very nicely, just like they have been doing for the last few years on these racing games, and the scenery gets more detialed, sharper, and suffers less pop up than before, but it's not right.
Cars don't glide like that. They don't have perfectly gleaming paintwork. If you're going to make a realistic racing game, at least make it realistc, yes?
The scenery is there, but it's not alive. Why aren't the trees blowing in the wind? Why is the grass so static? Why is everything so perfect - unflawed and evenly spread? Why can't I see the clouds moving across the sky, or maybe partially covering up the sun. I want to see shadows fade and reappear, I want to see the birds flying in the sky, and the people by the sides of the road moving, talking - doing something other than standing there like plasticine models. I want to be suprised and interested with what I see.
The graphics are improving, but they aren't getting any more realistic.
That seems a good line to end a topic on. A whole topic on racing games without the mention of racing, or in fact, anything other than graphics. Hmmm.
Never mind. Maybe I'll get it right next time......
The best factor of 'novelty' racers, as Meka calls them, is that there are very few restrictions within the game. Characters are usually original, as are tracks, and sometimes options.
There are also more options available. You can include everything you would in a real racer, (Time Attack, Race, Upgrades and Feuds) as well as novely exclusives like, Battle Mode, Chicken, Stunt Racing and Tag Mode)
I wouldn't like to see novelty racers become anymore real than they already are. 4 wheels is real enough, and as long as we have power-ups, boosts, rockets and lightning I'll be happy.
I only hope Mario Kart Super Circuit can carry on where the 64 version left off...
Handheld racing in true 3D has been a while getting here, but with Krazy Racers here and Mario Kart SC to come we don't seem to have much to worry about on the GBA front.
~ Game
As games develop and hardware gets better I'm sure all these things come into play, like moving clouds (Road Rash has them) and swaying trees, but in the end its not really what the game is about. its about racing.
What I would like to see is a fan connected to a usb post, so that when you speed up you'll feel the wind in your hair. you see it on arcades a lot, and its not hard to do.
Id love to see road rash remade on the MotoGP engine...
I have to drive pretty much every damn day,and whether you're driving at 30 MPH through a village, or 70MPH down a motorway, it's still rather dull, and merely a way of getting from A to B.
In racing games you don't get anywhere, you just sit, and drive.
Driving is boring.
Of course there is some excitement to be had from realistic driving games, the whole 'racing' thing, which I don't normally do! The high speeds, cool cars, etc but it's too much like real driving. No fun, and I don't get to the zoo at the end of my game.
Give me a 'novelty' racer any day. One with weapons, and strange courses.
But hey, each to his own.

You played GT3? It is awesome, I am glad that it is not another F1 game since they are released 2 every month or sumin!! The graphics are great, and it is racing games like that I can stand, and sometimes Games like Ridge Racer! But show me an F1 game and it goes straight back in the box and never sees daylight again!!

It's still incredibly boring though!!
Wait a minute....didn't I post a topic about expecting too much from developers?
Well in this case I'd have to agree that F1 style games aren't that well made. I would like to see some more detail in the games and I'd like the games to be better sounding!
In F1 World Grand Prix on the N64, it sounds like someone is using a hedgetrimmer whenever you watch a replay!

F1 games really pi$s me off!
We want realistic physics, crashes that hurt (but not so much that it ruins the game). Daytona USA and Driver are games that show us the way forward, now give us more detail and better graphics...oh and pedestrians we need those to.
Is it realistic engines and physics?
Or is is large explosive crashses?
Devellopers get all the boring things right but you hit a tree at 150 MPH just to bounce off it.
Wonder why I slate these games as incredibly boring?
