One day last week I was sitting on my swivel chair staring at my PC monitor, on it was the main page of FoG Prime. I was thinking about starting a topic and then I thought "originality", now there is nothing original to write about anymore (well hardly anything). This topic isn't exactly original but, i don't care.

Anyway Originality now a days is a rare thing in games, simply because they have been out for so long the box full of ideas has become empty, or has it?? (dum dum dummmmmmmm)

Well recently we have been seeing some of the greatest games of all time, supposedly made up of new ideas, but is this really true??? Well with some games the answer would be yes, take Conkers Bad Fur Day for example, it's cartridge was packed full of originality, with things from the great Might Poo's symphony to Gregg the Grim reaper (he's an evil little... ahem). CBFD is probably the most original game this year, with all the movie spoofs, this game is undoubtedly original. It won't be long now before some other company uses spoofs in their game.

As I said before a game like this is rare (I mean an original game) but as time progresses we are getting more of them. To name one would be Red Faction, what other game uses Geo-Mod technology?? My point exactly.

Any way back to my point, as time progresses we expect the amount of originality to decrease a lot more, however this would not be true (well to Ninty fans anyway). With the release of the Game Cube drawing closer, information on it's release titles have been released, actually some have been played.

Here are a few of the games that we can expect:

Pikmin- Highly original - wouldn't it be funny to watch those little plants work.

Starfox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet- Original I think but I’m not 100% sure.

Luigi's Mansion- Suck up those ghosts go on - this game is definitely original.

Super Smash Bros.: Melee- Been done before.

There are a lot more but at the moment I can't think of them (to be honest i can't be bothered, so you are welcome to)

At this present time we are lacking in originality, the reason is not really known. On the PS2 we do have one or two original games but that's just a minority. That is at this present time mind, Sony could well be holding back.

The future however looks different (not like poo stained pants which is what the gaming industry has at the moment, actually now I’m talking a load of poo) in the future we can expect a lot more originality, with fresh minds going into the gaming industry, also a lot more space to make games which is also a bonus.

If you think about it originality is like a fashion; one time it's out and another time it's in.

All I have to say now is:

The futures bright,
The futures Originality.

(Damn that doesn't rhyme at all)

Well thanx for reading

There is always that fear looming over the industry's head. The fear of out-doing a genre, using up all the ideas...

But really... think how many games, Console and PC, that we've seen, loads! There have been sports games, adventure games... there have also been games based on movies, and as long as the earth is round there'll be movies. Granted, Rare and Konami, Capcom and Inrogrammes won't be around forever, but where they leave off Swordspines and other companies can take over.

Originality won't be lost anytime soon, no two adventures are the same. We may even go back to the retro routes, but either way, there wont be a loss in the innovation department. We all have new ideas and in time, those people that go into the industry will develop their ideas into games.

But if you think about it, not that many of the games around us are that original, we have Football games, Rugrats games, Cricket games, Rugby games, Mary-Kate and Ashley... with Terminator and The Matrix around the corner... and a lot of these games are franchises that have been purchased from movie companies.

Granted, not all games are unoriginal, and things wil stay that way, but although this whole originality show is more that necessary to the games industry it was never a very big part. Sure it's seen the birth of Sonic and Mario, but there must come a day when Mario hangs up the Hammer and Sonic laces up the Light-Speed Shoes for the last time.

But don't fear, more people will take their place, and so the Circle of Originality continues...

Quite ironic isn't it... 'The Circle of Originality'
