Just wondering if the Shopping Cart used by Getdotted/SR is done using PHP or not?? and if so, did it take ages to create??

Thanx ....

Print and Echo are virtually the same. PHP has quite a few functions that are duplicated and are there just to facilitate people from different programming backgrounds and what they are used to.

The SR Ordering system took ages. The actual programming is relatively simple when you think about it (ie, it looks like just 5 simple steps), but believe me it is not.

Add in things like:

1. What happens when people click back and change an option
2. What if somebody joins, adds a free gist but then deletes the membership?
3. What if they select USA as their country by accident, we add the £2 additional postage then they click back and re-select UK?

Some items are postage exempt, some are 60p some are £3.00!

Membership prices vary on which country you are in.

THEN we have to find a way to securely get orders from Linux systems on to an internal system running on Macs!

THEN add to that the arguments between Tony, The Internet Manager and myself and it all adds up to nearly SIX WEEKS of full time work + overtime!

That was just the first system which went live in April. It didn't quite work out how we hoped so I re-wrote (my way this time!) and that went live in July and is the system we use now. It took about 2 weeks.

The next step is to transfer our GetDotted domain system over. (nearly finished should be live within a couple of weeks)

I have only ever used print on perl scripts and always use echo on php. I suppose print should work but echo is the standard.

I've always used echo. I think it's more reliable.

Andrew: Is there a difference?

Our linux servers rarley crash. I carn't remember the last time the web servers went down. The database server got slow a few months back and i restarted it but it didn't realy crash and the downloads server crashed the other day but it does run real server.

I am supposed to be answering questions in this forum and any other questions in other forums which relate to computer problems. Maybe I shouln'[t spend so much time in the Life forum but it is internesting and I only take a short lunch break.

How often do your Linux servers crash?

Also, as Freeola administrator, is surfing this forum part of your job?
