There has been a lot of "fav lyrics" and "fav bands" threads lately, which have made interesting reading. But what I want to know is this:
Why do you listen to music?
What is it that makes you want to listen to music?
For me, it's a lot of things.
I grew up with it being played constantly in my house, I learned to love The Beatles, The Doors, Led Zepplin, Captain Beefheart - I thought that was what everybody did.
But my sister doesn't listen to music.
I cannot get my head around that.
I can't remember the last time I watched television, but I know that I would be climbing the walls if I didn't have music.
It's a release for me. I constantly have tunes on, car in the morning on the way to work and on the way home, stereo goes on when I get in and Winamp rocking my PC whenever I'm on it.
Most of the time that I am awake and not at work, I am surrounded by music.
I choose to spend my freetime making music with friends and playing to people.
It keeps me going, helps me when I need to be creative, soothes me when the day fills me with static noise, cheers me up when I feel down, makes me smile when I'm happy.
I'm constantly doing cds and tapes for mates, borrowing from people, listening the radio, I can't walk past a music store without going in and browsing.
Obsessive? Maybe, but I find it so much more engaging than tv.
(This isn't a music vs tv thread, so relax)
I want to know why you listen to it, do you have it as background noise? Does it help you through times, remind you of experiences?
It can't just be me that has to have music constantly surrounding me can it?
Sorry, I don't buy that.
Yes, songs are written because the writer wants to express something. But I don't get into all that sort of stuff. If I think a song is good, I like it. If someone says to me "You can really feel the anguish" etc, I'm sorry, if I don't like the song, no matter how much emotion someones put into it, I'm still not going to like it.
I listen to music becuase, for some reason, I
> like the song. Simple as that.
Yeah, that's a big part for me as well. If I dont like the song, I can't listen to it.
I can admire the effort it takes, but I can't get into it.
However, even if I don't know the band, if I see them live and they are into it, I can sit and listen forever.
We've played with loads of bands, and most stare at the floor and act "cool", because it's the in thing to appear disinterested with it all.
that's not on
A London based station, check out xfm.co.uk as they are online streaming and Sky Digital as well.
It's the only radio station that plays anything from Jimi Hendrix to The Avalanches inside of 30 minutes.
I listen to music becuase, for some reason, I like the song. Simple as that. Because of this, I think, I have a wider range of music I like than alomst anyone I know, dance, trance, rap, rock, indie, 60's etc, chances are I'll like it.
The only forms of music I don't like are pop, classical and country.
I do agree with everyone that I can't stand not listening to music. As many of you know I moved to start a job a couple of weeks ago, and I don't have a telly. I do have a radio. I'm not missing the telly at all (excpept for the Grand Prix, but I go home to watch them, cunning eh?), but I can't imagine not having either a radio, or my CD collection or my PC to listen to .mp3's.
I don't know why this is, but I don't like sitting in a quiet room, I much prefer listening to music instead of sitting quietly, not sure why.
Also, Goatboy, what frequency is XFM? I want to see if I can get it down here.
100% on the mark there dude.
(ok, this is going to sound really artsy fartsy and I apologise)
Life, to me, is about passion and making sure you do everything you can at every opportunity to make the most of it. To not just sit there and plod along, wait for the weekend and sit in the garden. I'm not saying that's bad, I'm saying that's not for me.
Music is, I think, one of the few remaining expressions of the soul.
Tv doesn't do it, that's noisy and colourful and exists solely to sell you things.
Music allows you to be in a moment where nothing else matters, it's all right there and then.
That's why I dont like chart/pop music (I'm not saying it's crap, I'm saying I dont like it).
It doesnt allow for spontanaity - dance move here, clap hands there now smile!
To watch someone giving it their all (or hearing them) is to witness someone experiencing that rare thing, a joy at being alive.
Whenever I'm onstage, I've got a big stupid grin. I'm sweating like no tomorrow, my arms ache but it's the best rush there is. Me and my boys, creating something from nothing, wrenching these notes from the air and throwing them back out again in some kind of order.
I've got Metallica S&M, and got the DVD a day ago.
Now, the music may not be as good as it was, but you watch the band playing with the San Fransisco Philharmonic orchestra.
These classical musicians, giving 150%. Prim and proper ladies in their 40s with insane expressions as they tap into the music and let it flow through them.
Music has to be about life and passion and intensity.
I dont mean loud and angry, I mean someone up there doing it because they feel they have to.
Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Clutch, Tool, classical..all music that breathes life and fun into a life that can all too often be about work and money worries.
THAT is why I listen to music.
But, why do I listen to music? Easy, I can relate to the lyrics and/or music more so than I can to people if that makes any sense.
Quite often, I can relate to a song and/or band and interpret their music/lyrics into my feelings, thoughts, emotions and generally, my everyday life.
Music for me, means so much more if it has emotion and meaning, without those elements, all your left with is well, Chart music, but let's not get started on that subject eh?
Bill Hicks said it best;
"I remember when music had a conscience, music had soul and music had balls..."
Music sold it's soul a long time ago, I'm just glad there are artists out there today who can overlook the almighty pound/dollar and retain his/her integrity to create some great music.

But I found Xfm, which is like someone playing my CD collection over the airwaves.
I've discovered Badmarsh and Shree, Mull Historical Society, David Kitt, Deliquent Habits..so many bands that I would never have heard if I didnt listen to the radio.
I agree totally with what Darkreaper said, I need to hear music that is created with passion.
Be it Radiohead's angst, Captain Beefheart's nonsense lyrics, Clutch's pure rock fury, Gorecki's sorrow..I just need to connect with people trying to express themselves.
This is sounding poncy now, sorry.
That's why I hate "pop" (ie chart music by teen bands), there's no passion, there's no life in it. Click tracks and dance routines.
You listen to Steps or Hearsay and listen to the slick, souless singing.
Then go put on The Doors or Radiohead, people that have to make this music, people that have a voice inside that needs to be expressed.
Passion goddamit, that's what music is for me.
I'm now at work, totally exhausted and aching from playing for 5hrs last night. Sweated through my t-shirt, blisters on 3 of my fingers and eyes hurt.
But I know I'm sore and tired because I created something last night, 4 guys in a room expressing ourselves totally.
Music is not just for Xmas, it's for life.
I couldn't imagine all of my beloved CD's being taken away from me. (And by that I don't mean my CD's by the band the Beloved, I don't have any of those!)
Often we turn the TV off and stick on a CD. There's too much TV I don't like, so why watch it when I can listen to a CD instead?
Unfortunately my in car music is radio only. It stopped playing tapes, damn it, and I don't have the cash to replace it.

Me personally, i love music. I couldn't imagine life without and a day doesn't go by where i don't just crash out in my room with my stereo on.
There are many reasons i listen to music and some are easier to explain than others but i'll try. For one, music carries a lot of emotion and/or feelings and nothing else can compare to that, not even a well written book or a well directed film. Music is a great form of expression as well, the artist isn't just singing a bunch of words. Those words have some sort of meaning to that artist and people can relate to those songs. This varies from person to person and from artist to artist. Sometimes music can also effect our mood or view on life or current situations that we are going throw. I find the majority of classical music, especially Mozart, very relaxing and en-lightening, but i like to vary what i listen to from day to day so i don't get stuck in the routine of listening to the same type of music. I try to have a wide taste in music and i think i have but i can't understand when people only listen to one or two types of music.
When i'm not doing anything at home i either have the stereo on if i'm upstairs or have one of the music channels on when i'm downstairs. Even when i work i have music on and sometimes when i play games i turn the volume down and put a cd on. When i'm getting a lift off a mate or my parents i put the radio on or whack on a cd in the player.
Music is great, listen to some right now.....

P.S.
I've just read what i've just written and it doesn't make much sence does it?
