Does Windows 98 & Internet Explorer keeps records of my online activities?

The reason why I ask is because I recently got an email (Don't know how they got my address cus its my friends only one.)

When it downloaded, it automatically opened my web browser four times.

Sadly, when these pages started to download they were for sick and depraved child porn sites.

I stopped the download as soon as I realised what was happening but they had already added themselves to my favorites list and had changed my home page from Freeola to an index of these four sick sites.

Now I'm really scared that if my PC needs to go in for repair someone will be able to go through my system & dig them up & I'm gonna end up in prison for something I did not want or ask for.

I have since been told I should have reported the emailer but I had deleted it straight away & have no way of knowing who sent me it. All I can remember is that it ended in ".ru"

I cleared my history and temporory internet files, deleted all cookies and removed these sites from my favorites list.
Is this enough?
Am I right to feel this scared or is what people are telling me about secret files untrue?

I have since scrapped that email address.
Also is there anyway of filtering out this vile e-mail promotion before they arrive at my machine again in the future?

What you've done should be enough, but a repair guy shouldn't be looking there anyway and if they were to prosecute you the evidence would be inadmissable in court.

There are ways to recover "deleted" files but why would anyone bother?

As far as I'm aware, there's no law that could get you convicted for recieving unsolicited e-mail...underage viewing of adult material? Not realy my area.

You'll find that there are still hundreds of hidden files about your internet activity stored somewhere in the Windows folder, haven't ever needed to look in to it. If you're really paranoid, get a program like Evidence Eliminator, which will totally eradicate any records that are being kept. The downside of this is that it costs around £100, so don't get it unless you're really worried.
