The story about Pro Evo and Fifa both being online. Now thats old news, but one part of the article stuck out and got me thinking:
"In this life you're either a ProEvo nut or a FIFA fan. The top two console football gaming franchises have been having it out for their last few incarnations, with the critics seeming to prefer Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer, but the public not really listening and buying EA's FIFA series by the bucketload"
Now for the last few years, i think we can all agree that Fifa has mainly been selling on the basis of its up to date stats, and its mass advertising campaign, while the better games, whether it be Pro Evo, or TIF never seem to quite match it.
Is this really anyone else's fault other than Konami and Sony? With the release of Pro Evo 3, there were the odd adverts on tv, the advertising boards at football games and a few other areas the game could be seen selling itself. However, when looking at Fifa, when the last game was released it was everywhere. EA had 3 different adverts on TV, with the likes of Giggs, Davids, Henry, Del Piero all starring in them. There were adverts in bus shelters, in the newspapers, on bottles of your favourite fizzy drinks, even in my Sheff Wed programme last year!
No other football game comes close to going this far to get these games out there and known. And face it, when anyone sees on tv the likes of Henry and Davids promoting there game, more people are going to be interested in that, than having a few clips of the real game like Pro Evo did. Its sad but true.
If Konami really want to take over and not just provide the best football game out there, but actually take Fifa's crown from EA, they have to take a look at what EA do to promote their games. Its a sad truth, but the way things are, Pro Evo can only go so far with the way its being managed.
Konami need to start thinking of getting a ful FIFApro licesne, and investing a large amount of money into advertising the next release, otherwise the series is destined to live in the shadow of Fifa.
It's really no concern to me if more gamers buy FIFA due to it having flashy advertisements and the promise of being able to play as some pishy Division 3 team. Konami make the better game, and as long as I'm playing that, I know I'm enjoying myself.
PES > FIFA,
no advertising necessary.
If Konami start concentrating on beating EA on advertising then their focus may shift from producing a decent game to spending bucket loads on getting some overpaid footballer to appear in thier adverts.
Perhaps they did go a little in the way of this by getting Colina on the cover but i wouldnt really want it to go further. I couldnt really give a toss what the idiot down the road buys.
I'll just sit at home playing PES feeling smug and laughing at all the idiots who bought Fifa over it
Evidently it should say PES and not PSE in the title...
