Dont know if any of you have read this from a few weeks ago:

http://uk.special.reserve.co.uk/n_3065-news.html

The story about Pro Evo and Fifa both being online. Now thats old news, but one part of the article stuck out and got me thinking:

"In this life you're either a ProEvo nut or a FIFA fan. The top two console football gaming franchises have been having it out for their last few incarnations, with the critics seeming to prefer Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer, but the public not really listening and buying EA's FIFA series by the bucketload"

Now for the last few years, i think we can all agree that Fifa has mainly been selling on the basis of its up to date stats, and its mass advertising campaign, while the better games, whether it be Pro Evo, or TIF never seem to quite match it.

Is this really anyone else's fault other than Konami and Sony? With the release of Pro Evo 3, there were the odd adverts on tv, the advertising boards at football games and a few other areas the game could be seen selling itself. However, when looking at Fifa, when the last game was released it was everywhere. EA had 3 different adverts on TV, with the likes of Giggs, Davids, Henry, Del Piero all starring in them. There were adverts in bus shelters, in the newspapers, on bottles of your favourite fizzy drinks, even in my Sheff Wed programme last year!

No other football game comes close to going this far to get these games out there and known. And face it, when anyone sees on tv the likes of Henry and Davids promoting there game, more people are going to be interested in that, than having a few clips of the real game like Pro Evo did. Its sad but true.

If Konami really want to take over and not just provide the best football game out there, but actually take Fifa's crown from EA, they have to take a look at what EA do to promote their games. Its a sad truth, but the way things are, Pro Evo can only go so far with the way its being managed.

Konami need to start thinking of getting a ful FIFApro licesne, and investing a large amount of money into advertising the next release, otherwise the series is destined to live in the shadow of Fifa.

If they advertise more and it sells more than Fifa then that's cool. All i care about is that it sells enough so they keep producing sequels for it so i can play their far superior representation of the beautiful game. Let the ill-informed morons buy Fifa while us smart gamers who appreciate gameplay over having the correctly spelled name of some east european chap i've never heard of in the Polish 2nd division buy PES instead

Woah a discussion in the PS2 forum...whatever next?

Some very good points been made. While writing the post i was more thinking along the lines of Konami should be putting more into getting people knowing about the series, and getting the benifits from it themselves.

Of course, my main concern too is that i myself enjoy the better of the football games available, and in the end, i dont really care that the lad down the road is playing Fifa.

The game still sell ridiculously well in Japan and China now.

WE7 (PES3) Has sold about 1 million in about a month over there and are still selling ludicrous amounts.

Them Japanese know what the good games are, so aslong as we keep the sales figures up over here, everything will be greatest of evarest.

They won't, though. Enough buy them to generate money for the next instalment, as there are at least a relatively strong number of non-idiots in the gaming world.

And anyway, Konami's money doesn't only come from PES games. They're one of the biggest companies in Japan, and their Metal Gear Solid games, for example, always do exceptionally well. And I don't think you realise just how many RPG games for mainly PS2 and GBA they make, which all do very well in Japan, but just aren't released over here.

Konami make far too much money to stop one of their major developments, if not the biggest and best.
