upgrade my home PC, or will do, in June when my redundancy comes through.

I want the best combination of : -

* Motherboard,
* New memory for motherboard (400fsb?),
* GFX card (must be geforce, I far prefer nVidia)
* CPU (64bit?)

That this cash will buy. I must be able to play Doom3, Halflife 2 and farcry at speed. Not bothered about dvd writer, new shell or new monitor (hmmm, lcd?). I prefer to build my own, as its cheaper than off the shelf.

Anybody a hardware wizard? Any suggestions?

yeah, I'd have to upgrade the PSU. 350 at the moment. Hmmm, so the only thing that'll remain the same in my system is an 8X dvd reader, the two hard disks (60gb and 40gb), and my 40X cd-writer.

Cool. I'll be able to sell the rest on to a mate. Thanks again.

Reading on Gamespot they do mention that Nvidia recommend 480w PSU for there top card, so £60 would be a reasonable figure if you want to get a decent PSU. Actually for a decent 480w Antec your looking at £80. If you have a decent PSU thats already powerful enough then you can ignore the extra money, but if the computer is only running on a 350w you will experience problems, and may not even get the card up and running.

The X800 should run on the same sort of PSU as the 9800 series, as power consumption is about the same.

Don't forget to add another £60+ in getting a decent PSU as the 6800 demands alot and is recommended that you have at least 480watt.

You may want to check out the review on HardOCP before parting with cash for the 6800U.

Yeah, I guess you can see it as a prolonged holiday, a period in life where you can catch up and spend more time doing the things you want.

What did the site sell?

Entire site is closing. Not just me personally, but the whole workforce. It's been on the cards for years now, but has finally come through. *shrugs* I was going to look for new work after getting my degree, so although it's a little sad, I was considering moving on anyway. Still, when you are leaving people you spend more time with than your own family / partner........ ;)

Looks good!

I used to prefer Nvidia myself, but the recent sweetness coming out of ATI has forced me to keep an open mind. If I don't get a 9800 Pro/XT soon, I'll be waiting to see who turns out the better brand in the coming generation...

Just been doing a little scooting around, and have came up with: -

64 bit athlon 3400+ 270
Asus ASUS SK8V Motherboard 150
(use my existing coolermaster fan, or the one provided with the athlon)
ddr 400 512 x 2 160 80 X 2
XFX GEFORCE 6800 ULTRA 256 376.99 (Ouch. Pricey. From SR)
Keyboard 16

Giving a total of 972.99

No space for a TFT, but I can easily upgrade further in future. nVidia is a personal preference. Dunno why.

I think that should future proof me for a couple of years, and I may be able to make a deal on the prices from a supplier. Thanks for the help.
