With the so called next generation consoles either released or not to far from being released the future of gaming is set to go on for at least another 8 years unless something really strange happens to make us all stop playing. The graphics today have come a long long way since the likes of frogger and pac man. We are able to explore 3D worlds, play realistic driving sims, and shoot the living daylights out of bad guys on FPS's.
Graphics and gameplay are the two main ingredients to make good games and if they are at a high level ie the graphics are great and the game plays good then the game may even become better than good, it may become Great.

With the way technology advances its easy to see where things are going. Graphics will improve and so will the way they are stored, this means we should begin to see more games looking realistic. Remember Toy story 2 the film, well games may soon have graphics as good as that to blow you away with. After that we may even see extremely realistic graphics being used. But I see a little problem with this. Ok so games with violence and gore are given a certificate rating, like a 15 or 18 in some cases. But this dosn't really get taken that serious by parents. If games start to have graphics like films then they could have effects on young children.

The thing with games is that you interact with them, which dosn't happen in films. You are in control of what your vehicle/character does which could cause more harm than a movie to younger children. They may find it harder to determine its only a game.

TV and video games can effect young children, they can copy actions they have seen or played, it make them harder to tell what is right and what is wrong. They can act as kind of role models and without proper supervision could harm the child mentally.
So maybe another way of warning people about the game should be introduced. Have better warnings about the game on the box. Dont advertise it where children could see it.

This kind of thing won't happen for a long time as graphics have got quite a way to go before they start to even resemble the likes of movies. But will there come a time when graphics become too good and the fun of the games dissapear?

I don't think that graphics will ever reach the standard that make it hard to determine if its real or just a game, one thing that we can tell is that games should get better and better and so should the gameplay and graphics.

Does anyone remember the arcade game where you shot the cowboys with the gun. It was just like a movie, I didn't think this was much of a game as it seemed a little to real.

You do have a point there, the graphics might become so good that it will be hard to tell if you are playing a game or in real life. If this happens we might have a very messed up world, children running around with knifes trying to copy the actions of a certain game. On the other hand the graphics could bring new experiences to the player, like playing the role of a police officer, trying out what it will be like before taking the job, maybe.

Just like the bouncer?
One thing though as graphics improve so does storage on computers and consoles, there will come a time where there is enough space to have great graphics and gameplay which makes the game great.

Of course graphics can't get too good - You want them as good as possible - What they can't do is have good graphics at the expense of gameplay and the other factors.

I remember a game called Down In The Dumps, that came out on the PC about 5 years ago - Great graphics for the time - No gameplay at all.

I think that the better the gameplay and graphics get, the more restrictions are needed to stop children seeing something that will upset them. For example, in Doom, one of the first FPSs ever, you would get a few red squares when you shot a barely recognisable monster. Not particulaly disturbing.

However, in more modern games like Dune you can rip off a monsters arm and beat it to death with it (or so I've heard), and in Soldier of Fortune if you shoot someone their guts spill out behind them. Obviously these scenes are far more violent but would mean nothing if they were less realistic with poorer graphics.

With these examples it is clear that the better the graphics get the more games can express violent scenes, and the more they need to be restricted.

I don't see why it id thought that if graphics are of real-life quality, the games will no longer be fun?

Just because developers COULD make a realistic gaming environment, with people and shops and cars and trees, it wouldn't mean that they HAD to.

They could still create worlds of complete fantasy, they'd just look a little better.

The only time great graphics could be bad thing would be if the developers spent all of their time working on the graphics, and not enough on the game itself. People would then get bored, and the good games would come back. With fantastic graphics too.

I can't see why the graphics can't get to a point where they are of real-life quality, its just a question of time and technology. It will happen.

Many intro sequences of 5 years ago are below the standards of in-game graphics now, and cg is developing at the same rate. Look at the Final Fantasy Movie trailer. If they can do this, its just a matter of time before we are playing using characters of that quality. he hardware cant do it yet, not even the X-Box, yet perhaps Y-box or PS3? Its not out of the question.

Once graphics are of that standard, who knows what might happen? Having "interactive tv"? The pornography industry will pick up on that one (everyone knows they lead the internet), they have already had a go with Primal Image.

As is the way that the industry has moved so far, graphics are key. Any update of a game HAS to have better graphics than its original or people (fickle as they are) wont be interested. Graphics will improve with game generations and hardware specs, look at The Getaway. I place money on The Getaway 2 making the first look like Ridge Racer!

"Real life" quality is just round the corner.
