Researchers* today discovered that the humble Personal Computer could soon go the way of Sega, and bow out of the console market altogether. Recent analysis of the retail prices for the top 10 games produced some disturbing results.

For example, out of the top 7 major formats (PC, PS2, PSX, N64, GBA, GB and DC), it was understandable that the top 10 Dreamcast games came in at a total price of half that of the top 10 N64 games.

What WAS surprising is that fact that there was only £3 difference (an average of only 30 pence per game) between the top 10 PS2 games and the 10 ten N64 games.

Analysts** believe that this could be indicative of a price fixing cartel between Nintendo and Sony to drive the others out of the marketplace.

Those figures in full:

Total RRP for top 10 games:

N64 £358.90
PS2 £355.90
GBA £275.91
GBC £259.90
PSX £202.90
PCs £207.90
DCs £185.90

PC developers were asked for their opinions on these figures. One of them*** said:

"Well, it certainly looks like you get more bang for the buck by developing for Nintendo at the moment, just look at it! 3 out 4 of the most expensive formats are all Nintendo! There must be some money floating about there!! I certainly see no point at all in developing for the PC anymore!!! Where can I buy a DC by the way?"

Not sure about this one, perhaps Er-Yes was making a joke? Confusing Microsoft with the world of the PC? Perhaps Er-Yes has never seen a real PC in their life. I don't know. As a PC owner, I've never had nearly as many problems as Er-Yes would suggest will occur on a PC. My PC can run many games without problems and while some games may have things such as compatibility issues, bugs and downright bad programming there is a good reason for all of this. The PC market is very wide, you can get a PC from hundreds of thousands of different companies and while most use the same sort of processors (Pentium) and Operating System (Windows) there are lots of different makes of hardware. There are hordes of Graphics cards to choose from, tons of sound cards, a few different operating sytems and several different makes of everything you could possibly find inside your PC (including bits of hamburger you dropped). This means that games and software developers must make their product compatible with the most common hardware and hope that it will work on the majority of configurations. So no matter how hard they try there is always the chance of a compatibility problem for some (like Linux users, or owners of an Athlon AMD processor). That's why they release patches, drivers and so forth in an attempt to keep as many systems as compatible as possible with as much software and hardware as possible. As for bugs in games you must remember that games developers are only human and a few unexpected bugs which were missed in the many tests the games recieve (also from independent testers and members of the public) should be forgiveable, especially if they don't totally ruin the game. Now Bad Programming you may think is the one without an excuse, and to a certain extent it is, but with all the different development companies that compete and produce games for the PC you can't expect them all to be masters and nobody starts experienced at what they work at, this has to be obtained through practice.

So Er-Yes, you might want to consider watching what you openly say about "celebrities" since you may find yourself being sued, arrested or even imprisoned for things such as stalking. Remember that in the Jill Dando trial the accused was found guilty with a lot of circumstancial evidence probably only because it was a celebrity murder. Also, don't hate that which is unknown or which you may have had one or two bad experiences with because how can you be sure you aren't missing out on something good?

Damn right. New N64 games (although they are rare in itself,) cost more than new PS2 games!

The PC never was in the console market, it was in its own little crap world where everything goes wrong and its not worth buying. I hate PC's from the moment you turn one on to the moment you turn one of (or most probably it crashes). They are crap, infact if someone ever let me loss with my hammer in a PC factory then the scenario would be amazing.

Unlike my other half er-no, I have a hatred stronger than most people can even dare to imagine...

..Welcome to the new breed or crap. The Pentium4, which runs slower than any G4 or even G3...

I spit and Bill's head, I play darts with his face as a bullseye, I have a picture of him at the bottom of the toilet, I want to kill him! SIMPLE!

Rubbish! The price of carts is higher than discs, and if you offset the price of the cart the game is the same price as a disc game.

Also, PS1 games can be had for less than a fiver. PS2 games are out at less than £20, and seeing as its the latest machine thats not too bad at all.

Sony really is ripping off its customers...the price of the Nintendo games can be justified as theyre on carts.

Still it remains to be seen if Xbox games will be priced closer to there PC or Console competition.

The market should certainly become more competetive in November :-)
