Okay SSX is good, so are Onimusha and Red Faction BUT they haven't broken ground in the same way GT2 and MGS did!
I know the latter games have sequels coming out but after an 11 month release there haven't been any brilliant games out on the PS2. I suppose this is down to preferance and opinion, BUT every honest PS2 fan will admit that, in comparison, the PSX games are better overall.
I think one reason for Sony's 'slip-up' was their advertising. I know they've been renound for excellent advertising, and many people say it's what gave the PSX its step up in the gaming world, but they don't seem to have taken the trouble with the PS2. I've seen an advert for F1 2001 which was quite good but they should have done one for Red Faction:
'Loads of Guns, Loads of Enemies, Blow Up your surroundings... Start The Revolution!! - Red Faction, only on Playstation 2'
Maybe Sony think that people will buy their console and games anyway... I kinda think Nintendo did this. With the N64... they had a *twice as powerful* machine, franchises like Mario and Zelda etc and a very good reputation coming off the back of the SNES! But no... as much as I HATE to admit it, Sony mopped the floor with Nintendo but only with regards to consoles... Pokémon layed-the-smack-down on Digimon! And as for the Pocket Playstation.... LMAO!
But that's all in the past... and with all that behind them Nintendo can take advantage of Sony's DISGUSTINGLY slow start. Nintendo's launch games will all be good. PIKMIN, SFA, SSB: Melee! Not to mention the Third Party Support....
The games also mean that Nintendo loyalists can get to play some of the best games around (like Crazy Taxi) on a Nintendo Machine! I don't think may Nintendo Gamers will pass u the Gamecube... it's cheap in price, has good games, and a very promising future, but if one company can completely mess it up, Nintendo can!
If they don't advertise the Gamecube properly they'll screw up again... They will advertise it, BUT they really need to throw the Gamecube name around like that a common stale, only with a better reputation! :)
They'll have to get the timing perfect, just before christmas would be good, because kids might say "I want one of those" and Mum and/or Dad wait til after Christmas to spend the big bucks!
The downside of the UK release date is the timing... people are gonna be recovering from Christmas, and only just be able to bring home the bread as it is, forget the January sales, have youn seen the inflation rates?! lol, Just kidding...
Another Player is Microsoft, they haven't announced any UK/Japanese release dates for the X-Box yet and because of it they could suffer, but again, their advertising could make all the difference. Nintendo, as good as they are could be portrayed as ish compared to Microsoft purely because of the Advertising.
So, as you can imagine, the way the companies advertise the consoles is more than important!
Any thoughts?!
Game
An advertising campaign i'd like to see is the X-Box one. I know they have quite a backing ($500,000,000 - lol)
> Sitting here waiting for what?
Some work to do!
It's all very well not having much to do, but you soon get sick of it. I've approached people about giving me something to do, but it can't happen yet, as I'm not in that team, but someone is speaking to someone else, and then someone else will get back to me....
Ah the frustations of working for a large company.
:-)
> Meka, are you involved in advertising?
No I'm involved with sitting here waiting.
And boy is it depressing!
The only problem with your idea is that you'd have to do it all while still remaining within budget, whcih may not be possible.
Personally I believe that the launch is a highly important time, you've got to get people to want it when theyy can have it. If you do too much before people do get sickof waiting.
If it were my job to co-ordinate the launch of a console, heres' what I'd do:
I'd make sure that there were plenty of units possible, but spread rumours that they may be a shortage. Make those that are unsure panic buy!
I'd also do a huge 'roadshow' campaign. I'd take my console to various shopping centres all round the company, for one day at a time, and shout about it.
I'd make sure that people knew that the roadshow was coming too, with radio adverts, a poster or flyer campaign, and maybe an ad on the regional TV channel.
Once people started to arrive in the shopping centre to do their shopping you'd start your shouting. Well promotion. Get people over to see what you've got. Have a large video screen rolling footage of the games in action, talk up the big titles, show it off.
Then I'd have pods opened so people could play the games for a few minutes each, experiencing the wonder first hand.
Then I'd hold a small contest, letting some of the public battle it out, and get excited about the chance of winning a prize.
I'd hand out freebies, little badges and keyrings, but most importantly there would be vouchers:
£20 off a Nintendo GAMECUBE if purchased by (date two weeks after launch)
Buy 1 pad, get second half price!
£5 off various games.
People like to think that they're getting something at a better price than others, and will think that they may as well get one now for cheaper than wait and pay full price at the end of the month.
Don't give the consumer a chance to think about it, just make thenm buy, buy, buy!
