You know, I look out over the Future of Gaming today, and what do I see?

I see the Sony camp, a group who pride themselves over their technological achievements and the vast amount of choice for their console. This camp reaches out to gamers of all ages, and reels them in with talk of Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, broadband, hard drives and countless other future assets. They are proud of their choice and will not be swayed, and they thoroughly believe that Sony is the only true way forward. They will defend the black behemoth day and night from the heavy barrage fire emanating from the Nintendo camp, but their defences are impregnable.

I see the Nintendo camp, a group whose main strong point is the games. They worship a man known as Shigeru Miamoto and the software house Rare. They will defend the honour of these men to the death with talk of the fantastic games, unending depth and constant originality. The Nintendo hardware is no great achievement, having about the same power as Sony’s offering despite being two years its senior. The one thing you can count on with Nintendo is that each game will reach new heights in gameplay and graphics don’t count for nothing.

I see the Sega camp, a group who recently pulled out of the hardware market and has focused on software. They are the neutral body, who develop for each and every other group. They are purely in it for the games, yet they have still amassed quite a following of die-hard Dreamcast supporters who will argue that this failing machine has everything anyone could ever want and more. Despite their enthusiasm, they can only be described as shortsighted, and must one day move on. Every Sega game guarantees great playability and a huge lifespan fused together with arcade thrills. Every offering from its many software houses is something to be looked forward to.

And then I see the Microsoft camp, the new group in town. Most people look upon them as evil newcomers who are just in it for the money. They use their amazing wealth to buy their way around. They make neither their own hardware nor software, and employ or purchase companies to do it for them. Arguably the most powerful of the four, their offering is more akin to a PC than a console, and it brings many of the PC problems with it. Sightings have been reported of blue screens and unstable workmanship, the question on everybody’s lips is will people ignore Microsoft’s previous failures and give them a second chance? The evidence is bleak, with only a few inhabitants of the Future of Gaming willing to give a second look to them. This group is a force to be reckoned with, utilising their superior hardware and big name developers to their advantage. Whatever the future holds for Microsoft, rest assured they will be back.

And as I look out over the Future of Gaming, what else to I see? I see war, conflict, battle and skirmish. I see rival groups fighting with and within each other over polygon counts, unit size and storage. I see friendships built and destroyed over games consoles, things that were created to bring enjoyment into the world. Palestinians and Israelis in the Gaza Strip are warring over our mistakes, Pakistanis in Afghanistan are being brutally ethnically cleansed by Muslim extremists. Babies and capitalists are executed every day in China yet we ignore all this cruelty and wage war amongst ourselves of consoles? Games were created and nurtured to bring happiness and enjoyment into our lives. We should be ashamed of ourselves that we are creating all this conflict when people are dieing for their beliefs in other parts of the world.

We should stop all this and be grateful as to what we’ve got, which is a form of enjoyment and a damn fine one at that, whichever you choose.

Goatboy would like to point out that everyone is getting heated over a video games console.

Just a thing that plays games, nothing more, nothing less.
(except for the PS2, which plays DVD as well >:P )

Just relax, take a deep breath and realise that, hey, the only people that are "losers" are those that think Lylat Wars is a good game.

So, keep on moving people, nothing to see here...walk on by folks, bigger and better issues to fight about.

What a lovely thread to stumble into on a Monday morning....

I'm sure you all know my position in this, but what the hey, I do so love to state it, over and again!

I'm waiting for the Gamecube. It has the games that appeal to me. I like the look of some of the games available for the PS2, but there aren't as many that I want, as there are for the Gamecube. Nothing I have seen on the Xbox appeals to me.

I honestly don't care which is most powerful. I'm not going to use them to run a nuclear generator afterall, I want to play games on them. It doesn't take a great deal of power to make a great game, but if you can use what you have to create innovative titles, that are fun to play, then I'll want to play them.

I'm a Ninty. I love Nintendo games. I want to play Luigis Mansion. I want to play Metroid Prime. I want to play Zelda. Hell, I even want to play Pokemon! these are the games that appeal to me. Nintendo games have brought me many happy gaming experiences, and I trust them.

I know that however long the Gamecube lives for, Nintendo will support it with some great games.

Yes the PS2 and Xbox will produce great games too, but they're different from what I know, and I'm kinda stuck in my ways!

I know that the Gamecube will have games i can enjoy with my kids too. I don't want to only be able to play games after the kids are in bed because none of the games i have a suitable!

Malibu loves to watch the videos I have downloaded of Luigis mansion, Pikmin and Super Smash Brothers. I'll be able to play these games to keep her entertained. They will be simple enough for her to play too as she grows up, and I hope she enjoys them.

What games would appeal to her on the PS2, or the Xbox?

I don't know. I don't have time to wander too far into the unknown. I've considered my options, and made my choice. The Gamecube will deliver to me the best gaming experiences for the money.

I've made an informed choice, and I hope to be happy with it. As long as all of you out there are happy with the decisions you have made, as long as you're not too blinkered to see what else is available then you should be happy too.

er-no, I appreciate your feelings about how you have been let down by Sony but I do think you are playing the wrong games. To this day I am still bashing away at TimeSplitters, Crazy Taxi, Quake 3, StarFighter and SSX, the latter being the only game I had for a month at launch and was played non-stop. Maybe the case is that you are not suited to a PS2, and that's fine. I know I am because right now I want Rumble Racing, Monkey Island, Red Faction and of course GT3. There are many fantastic titles weeks away. Admittadly it faultered at the starting line but it is beginning to pick up the pace now.

I got my PlayStation 2 on the very day it was launched, and not for one of the 2,0152,800 seconds it has been in my possesion have I regretted buying it. It has brought be constant enjoyment and never once have I thought about playing on it and decided I didn't want to. I don't buy many games but I choose wisely. Maybe if PlayStation 2 owners were more sensible with their money a lot more people would be happy with them.

As usual it's your choice and I'm not going to try and disuade you but just think about what I've said.

The fact is the Sony promised so much with the Playstation 2, and although most of you Sony lovers may be happy with the PS2, thats really because you are settling for what you have brought and see that because the Playstation had the creme de la creme of games that everything the PS2 has must be equally amazing..

..*newsflash*... all you £300 PS2 console buyers should realise how much you have been ripped off, at the moment the PS2 has three worth while or worth the money games, it has a game which everyone has been looking forward to for the last three years (MGS2), and with that fact alone, I am getting slightly worried over the future of the black box that sits collecting dust in my room, with only Red Faction to keep it having the occasional towel.

'The PS2 will be th future of videogaming'. When the Sony spokesman said this was he dreaming, because if this is the truth and the future of videogaming is one very good (not amazing) game in every two hundred, then please tell me now so I can collect my SNES from the attic and begin to play amazing games.

Seriously, don't bite my head off, there is nothing I want more than to see Sony and Nintendo in the gravel pit fighting for supreme ruling, sadly Microsoft had to butt in.

It seems to me that the PS2 is riding the glorious wing of the Playstation, and people are allowing mistakes and cockups to take place because they believe that Sony can't be faulted after such a great success!!

The promises Sony made two years ago, ruling out all competition have become broken promises or to be put harshly 'lies'.

Yes, I will wait for Metal Gear Solid 2, yes I will wait another year, as Konami are using every last second of the day to make it the best title ever, but while I wait for one game on the Playstation2, I await over ten on the Gamecube, eight of which are at launch next year in March.

In my room three years ago I used to have blue curtains, I liked these blue curtains, they forfilled there purpose and went with the colour of the wallpaper. Then one day two years ago I arrived home I found that my mum had changed the colour of the curtains to white, I looked and saw that the change was amazing, the room looked a lot bigger and made me feel happier.

What I am trying to say is that the Playstation 2 may forfill the purpose of playing games and DVD's, but I am convinced that there is better, they promised better and basically, us PS2 owners may not see it, but we deserve the white curtains.

Think about it.

Turbonutter, for the first time in these forums you have managed to annoy me, you say the GameCube hardware is old and 'two years the PS2's senior', well then with that comment you don't know what you are talking about!

Computer consoles don't need power for good games, infact I would prefer to play Tony Hawks and Rayman on my 32bit GameBoy Advance then half of the average games on the Playstation 2. That kind of comment is what is ruining the videogame industry. 'Oh yes, power is everything', or so you may think.

Next time, operate brain before touching keyboard!
