Just a quick thread for the weekend.

Who are your favourite stand-up comics and more importantly, who do you really hate? They can be British, American, etc.

Also do you pick up any of their DVDs or have you been to any of their shows or would like to eventually?

List of stand-up comedians

Bill Hicks. Gotta disagree. My mates all think he is a legend. Myself, not so much.

He was ok, and I found most of his stuff funny. But his political agenda really took over. You hate government...we get it. I don't want it forced down my throat.

And I'm not a huge fan of anger in comedy. I don't associate humour with wanting to punch someone in the face :D Unless you fall off a curb whilst attempting to do so and breaking your knuckle like I did. Good times!

I should mention that I was trying to hit a mate, not a real fight....

And Chris Addison. I actually heard of him, then steered away because the name annoys me so much. Had a manager called it once, who was just ........... Small things that effect our lives eh?

Yes, Goatboy seemed to mention him an impressive amount from what I remember (it all seems so long ago now...).

There are a lot of comedians who are shocking and antagonistic for the sake of being funny (and who can blame them), but with Bill Hicks you felt there was a purpose to it. He rarely went for cheap or easy laughs. He was often angry but also inspirational, he had something to say about the way people treat each other and just happened to be shocking and very (very) funny along the way. He was something of a hero of mine when I was growing up!

I have to say, I've not really seen/ heard much of his stuff. Don't know why, just kind of haven't. I know Goatboy was a big fan of his though.

Yep, great band :) Still play them a lot in the car!

I was a bit annoyed as RFTC's frontman Speedo played London the other week with his latest band (The Sultans) and I managed to miss out.

Yeah, I quite like Denis Leary too. No Cure For Cancer was good fun, but I could do without the singing! He's quite good in Rescue Me on TV, too.

Also deserves a mention... Chris Addison. Okay, so his TV work is patchy (Lab Rats will hopefully be forgotten very, very quickly) but his stand-up shows are great and he had a fantastic Radio 4 show called The Department with John Oliver (the English one off The Daily Show, who also did an HBO Stand-Up TV special - which is worth picking up if you like jokes at the expense of Americans ;).

and if you're liking Hicks, then look up Denis Leary as well.

Yeah, I know some of you are going to say "oh, Leary, he stole Hick's act" But they both just had similar material at similar times at the birth of the ironic anti-society comic.

And besides, No Cure For Cancer was brilliant. I've got it on CD and watched the video loads of times, even if I don't agree with what he's saying it's still funny.

How has only one person in this thread mentioned Bill Hicks so far? He has to have been one of the most influential and downright legendary stand-up comedians in decades.

If you like stand-up, you all need to put his DVDs on your Xmas wishlists!
