It's used in Onimusha to bring up the Options screen; Madden NFL 2001 uses it to call Timeouts.
I'm sure theer are many more uses in other games, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Surely theres some gamesthat require you to use the 'select' button?
I know that it was handy in tons of NES and SNES games!
Mind you, if it wasn't there a different button would have done the same thing...
