Most people also have a favourite console maker, Nintendo, Sony, Sega and believe it or not some people will like Microsoft. This is a common fact, highlighted by all the "Sony Rules-Nintendo is for kids" and "Greystation sucks-Sony don't even make games" posts that pop up from time to time. Personally I stand with Sony but it is quite hard to actually try and work out why we all have these silly prejudices about other console manufacturers.
We don't actually believe most of the things we say about the other consoles when involved in a slagging match, it is simply 'Right you are not going to win this argument Nintendo boy!'. So where do our favourites come from and why do they make us so unreasonable when somebody disagrees with us.
One theory might be that we buy our console and stubbornly argue that 'It Rules!' so that we don't have to admit that we had been such a chimp to spend our hard-earned cash on this plastic pile of trash, no names mentioned...sega saturn. :D
Another thing might be the first impressions that you get of a console. The other night I was round a mate’s house and we decided to dust off his old N64 and give it a go. I hated every minute of it. The games were totally different to the ones I usually play, the controller was awkward and the views on Smash Bros were very infuriating. I kept getting my ass kicked on Goldeneye and Perfect Dark despite being a master of similar style games on the Playstation. I came away thinking that console should be burned on the stake as it was so rubbish.
Obviously this was just spur of the moment but it was the same thing when I was attracted to the Playstation. I went to a different friends house, played on his nice new Playstation and thought wow, this looks class, FF7 looks amazing and GT is wicked, I know lets go out and buy one of these. And I did, the next day. So maybe it is these first impressions that get us to stand by a console name at all costs and shield it from the insults of the enemy.
You could be totally impartial and have every single console under the sun and not have a favourite in the least. If so I am going to ignore you ;-). People have very strong opinions on their console of choice and consequently these feelings turn to anger when abuse is thrown at our consoles. Could this mean that we are so addicted that we treat them like our children, in a primal way protecting our consoles from attacks.
So does anyone know why they like the consoles that they do and why such strong feelings are attached to them. Please none of the posts mentioned earlier like "Its because Sony suck, you biased fool!"
Then I saw an advert for Saturn and Panzer Dragoon, and decided maybe I was wrong. I went to my local Game store to buy a Saturn and a copy of the game, but saw a PlayStation running Wipeout, which looked even more impressive - so I bought that instead.
A few months after that, I had a pretty nasty break up with my fiancée and the PlayStation was a great outlet for my anger and frustration, and got me through some dark times, so I guess you coud say that was when we 'bonded'!
The PS2 was a logical progression because at the very least I could keep all of my old PS1 games. And I haven't been disappointed.
I don't rule out buying another brand, but at the moment, I don't see the need for it.
