I'm getting a new Motherboard, an ABIT KT-7A RAID, it says that it can handle AMD Athlons and Durons. I saw an AMD Thunderbird. Is a Thunderbird the same as an Athlon or Duron?

Yeah, i've been there and saw the board i wanted, and i was pretty sure the chip i wanted woud work, but i thought i'd better check.

An AMD Thunderbird goes under the full name AMD Athlon Thunderbird. The main noticable difference is that the Thunderbirds use a socket connector to the board, and the older normal Athlons use a slot type connector.

i.e. Athlon Thunderbird needs Socket A
Athlon needs slot A

You Abit board is the KT7-A RAID and is the right board for this chip, very good board too!! I have an older Athlon with the KA7-RAID!! Your board may also be able to support the new Athlon Paolimino(spelling??) chips due out later this year with a little bios update!!

The easy answer is NO. They aren't.
