Many of us regularly battle it out here in the Special Reserve Chat Forums, discussing the pros and cons of the Playstation2 compared to the Dreamcast. So the Playstation 2 is more powerful than the Dreamcast, and maybe the Dreamcast has a better selection of games than the Playstation2...but I want you to ignore these arguements for now and concentrate on style.

Style, but why I hear you ask? Well anyone who remembers the days of the 8bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) will realise that style has come a long way since then. The NES was perhaps one of the most unstylish consoles ever to grace this planet, its design can only be described as a grey box...and yet in its day it was the most popular console in the world.

What I want to know is how much design, and style means to you...we always say that well buy a console based on the quality of games available for it, but think! Would you buy a Playstation2 if it looked like a NES???

I'ld like to know what console, in your opinion has the best design?

Do you think that the Playstation 2 looks like a VCR, has a dodgey power button??
Or perhaps you think the GameCube looks like something that wouldnt look out of place in a Nursery??
Maybe the Dreamcast is the best looking console on the market today, but its joypads let it down??
Is there a machine you wouldnt buy, just because its design is so awful??

Whatever your opinion I want to hear it, just leave the machines specs and games out of the arguement. Yes these rules mean you could argue that the MasterSystem was the best designed console in History (But I doubt it!).

Let the discussion commence @8-]

I heard the same thing Armitage Shanks, that is that Microsoft will produce a range of different sized gamepads. This will be a plus point for Microsoft, after all a lot of people have smaller hands (children, females and asians for example tend to have smaller hands) whereas some people have larger hands (e.g. adult males). The different sized pads should make the Xbox more accessible to gamers.

As for the most stylish Console well Ild have to say that I think that the Panasonic GameCube looks pretty hot. It looks like a portable DVD player (Well it is) but it will also have the power to play GameCube games. Definately the most stylish console.

The Nintendo GameCube looks like its going to be very small and compact. If the console was bigger then you may have said that its a kids toy..but anything that small and powerful just has to be admired.. Its got a great design, and perhaps it will be the first truely portable home console as its small size and wireless pads could prove to be a killer combination.

As for the X-boxs design its a bit bulky, but at least its black and wont look out of place in front of your TV. The only looming question is will the green Xbox logo in the centre of the console light up...If it doesnt I believe the console may look very tacky.

As for the Design of the Playstation 2 well the neon blue PS2 is a nice touch. However the front is a disgrace, it looks bad, only has 2 ports and the power button looks like its been stuck on. The Playstation 2 doesnt quite know if its a VCR or a Console.

As for the Dreamcast, what a cool design. The white colour makes it stand out a mile away. The four ports highlight the fact that its a console and proud of it. The coolest looking console on the market right now, only let down by its strange looking controllers.

I know what the most stylish looking console out coming out is. It is the DVD GC. I mean look at it. Wouldn't look at all out of place in a japanese mans house. Probably why it isn't being released in Europe then.

p.s Does anyone know if Ant has finished writing his story yet. I cannot wait to read it.

My DualShock 2 has had one of those, ever since I sneezed while playing GT2...

I use the gamepad pro myself... its not a problem I've really ever had... For me the buttons are in pretty much excatly the right place... and also the right size for moveing quickly/frantically from one to another :)

See... now... I dunno myself... I'm only goinng by the journos here... I only really started taking note of the satements after the Japanese press started saying the X-Box was too big... and that MS were thinking of making smaller controllers for the Asian market...

Apparently western jornos really liked the controller... responce, feel, etc... thet loved... they just wernt sure about the big green blob in the middle (some loved it, some hated)

I wasn't that impressed...

I have a Sidewinder gamepad for my PC, and the handles are far too flat. Get a bit sweaty when you're playing, and the thing just plops out of your hand if you don't keep adjusting your grip, and adjusting your grip distracts you from the game. Not ideal in a frantic game!

And my Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick is very good, but my only complaint is that the base is too high, meaning you can't rest your arm on the desk, which gives a nagging ache in the arm, leading to cramp.

As for the X-Box controller... obviously I haven't used one, but it just seems odd to me, having the left analogue stick higher up the pad than the right one...

For me, Sony's pads are the most comfortable and seem the most natural to hold, with the angled grips preventing it from slipping out of my grip. The only thing they could do to improve it (in my opinion) is make the D-pad circular rather then a cross shape, because the diagonals can be a pain to hit in those frantic moments.

You've used an X-Box controller then huh? :)

Just jesting man... :)

Although... From what Ive read from UK and American journos (Internet mags only) who have used the X-Box controller, they seem to be of the impression that it is possibly the most comfortable/sturdy controller commming...

... Remember, they already have a long and impressive history in controller design and production... from Joysticks, Joypads, Mice, Steering Wheels, etc...

The PS2 looks a bit like a convection heater when its lying flat, but turn it on its side and its a beast. Its a nice feature to be able to do that, for people without the space.

The Dualshock controller is the undesputed champion though. The Megadrive pads were pants, the B button bust long before you finished RoadRash, The N64 pads were just plain odd and the Xbox is a monstrosity! the only one that comes close to being as useable as the PS pads is the SNES pads, which were the best of the time.

The DC pads are just plainly awful! having a screen on them is completely pointless - youre looking at the screen, not the pad, the triggers are annoyingly placed, the rumble packs are bought seperately, and it feels so plasticky. its like holding a kids dinnerplate!

Its true that these machines are for playing games on, but with so little separating these machines (As they will all have great games) style may be important for each machines success.

Would you buy a Playstation 2 if it looked like a NES??
