Do you know what the Legend of Mir is? Well it is a free, huge, online RPG that you download off the web or soon order a disc. It is absolutely stunning for a downloadable game with excellent FMV sequences and decent graphics. But it isn’t the Graphics that make the game it is it’s clever and invoking system and enjoyable Gameplay.

Don’t worry this isn’t a review but the Legend of Mir could be the beginning of a trend? Remember when the Playstation 2’s version of Tomb Raider was supposed to be the last and extra levels, items etc… were to be downloadable off the Internet not a bad idea if I say so myself.

Imagine a WWF game perhaps Smackdown 3 and to upgrade it instead of dishing out another 40 quid to buy a new game download them onto the game, extra Wrestlers, new arenas, new moves, extra clothes and new game modes all could be downloaded. Same with football games as well.

Sure we will need a new game for new storylines but imagine no more sequels, you get one game and just continue to upgrade it! This could increase the amount of original titles we see on all systems as well.

Some of you who read N64 magazine will know that the Gamecube memory cards are big enough to hold an N64 game and N64 magazine honestly believe there is a good chance that memory cards could have NES, SNES and Gameboy (not N64) games in them! How about downloading NES, SNES and Gameboy games off the Internet and onto the Gamecube memory cards?

The Legend of Mir makes this not as outrageous as we might have first sounded? So what do you think? Do you think downloadable games are something that will feature in the future of gaming?

Here’s to the future

It would of course add to the game e.g. insert disc, disc not found etc...

If the particular game it needs to add to isn't there then it cant download wouldn't of seen that as a problem to be honest!

Microsoft are doing this with Windows XP, and later on, Hailstorm, their thing that runs with .NET - the idea is thatyou continually pay a subscription fee for a constant upgrade of a certain program - eliminating packaging and CDs forever - but this will only work if users think they need to upgrade to this new technology, and only when broadband internet becomes the norm.

Good post. But i'm not sure that downloading upgrades is going to be happening soon. There would need to be some way of making sure the person downloading it already owns the original. The original would have to be coded in such a way that it searches for upgrades before loading.
This is too much hassle for developers and there isn't enough of a demand for this kind of thing. Also I'm sure they will charge people for the upgrades. Which could lead to piracy as im sure you would be able to duplicate the file and pass it on to a friend.
