My 150 watt Step-down converter arrived today along with The Chornicles of Riddick. Still same LIVE name for both UK and US LIVE accounts so those wondering if you can transfer a UK account onto a US Xbox (Bullet) you can.
Am cracking on with Full Spectrum Warrior but will let you know what Riddick is like later on.
Me = Merely pleased.
Played it on LIVE last night and could only find one game, when I joined he said he had been waiting for over an hour and when he logged on there weren't any games available to play, I have a feeling it won't get much better when it is released over here.
Excellent to play on LIVE and thankfully he was pretty sorted so the game was enjoyable. Not sure about how much replay value it will have though, did two missions without losing anyone on LIVE in about an hour on the hardest difficulty and because the enemies are nearly always in the same spots it makes for pretty easy pickings once you have played it through once. IGN commented about the lack of some sort of "Terrorist Hunt" mode where the enemies spawned in completely different areas every time you load the map.
Nice touch though is that the game does save when playing on LIVE, it saves to the hosts Hard Drive where it loads from if anything happens so unlike Rainbow Six 3 where this option was sorely lacking when playing Terrorist Hunt on Elite it does rear it's useful head in Full Spectrum Warrior.
I am 4 missions into the 11 now on the hardest mode and I would imagine that I will have it easily done by weekend. Will definitely go back through it though and use different tactics so from a personal point of view I will get a hell of a lot of replay value out of it.
Despite what Gamespot pointed out about the lack of variation (it's all run, hide, shoot in a circle) the game really does force you to think around the situation. Granted most of the time it is just a case of engaging the enemy with Alpha and then using Bravo to flank the terrorist whilst he isn't firing upon them; this alone is an immensely satisfying way to do things and it is something that for me will never grow old.
In comparison with other squad based shooters Full Spectrum Warrior is a superbly presented and well-executed effort that really does offer something completely new. Those who played the original 2D Swat games on the PC will find a few similarities with the games approach to the action. It does however bring a lot of new ideas forward that a year a go people might have dismissed, for instance not having full control over your squads movements was frowned upon by some however in a market which is basically thriving with many different Army games all using the same approach it is nice to see the action from a completely different angle.
I will hopefully get around to playing Riddick and Lord of The Rings: Return of the King tonight after the Euro 2004 matches finish at around 9:30pm so if I get chance I will lob my opinions of them both in here.
FSW is awesome, top 3 Xbox games yet, been playing it for mot of the day on the Elite difficulty and it is difficult, make that impossible to seriously fault.
Technically the game excels, audiophiles will appreciate the excellent score and positional audio for the Dolby fans amongst us. The music is very 'Black Hawk Down' esque but the other tracks are very un-orthadox without spoiling the military feel. Visually the game sports Havoc 2.0 (Ragdol and some of the best yet), the environments are highly detailed and very topical, little interaction though, sofas can be shot to pieces, as can cars and market stalls etc but aside from that you can't interact very much with your surroundings.
From a gameplay point of view it is difficult to fault, I personally love tactical/strategic and anything Army/Marine related so as you can imagine I am in my element. Sweeping, covering, suppressing, you name it the game has it all. This is the definitive Army game and like no other it manages to pull off some of the most outstanding tactical set pieces I have ever seen. You have to have some sort of tactical knowledge and know how with the forces to get through certain situations as it really does require a hell of a lot of thinking, at least on the Elite mode anyway.
Some excellent little touches as well. The Jewish kid from Philly never stops swearing and the games approach to mature content definitely doesn't hide in a box, a big fat 'M' on the case is testament to that, much to the displeasure of children in America as parents have actually outraged at THQ cashing in on the situation with Iraq and the way the game approaches a similar situation, to that I say "Meh".
One of the soldiers in the Alpha team is a devout Muslim who joined to "pi** off his parents", another one "never had so much like he did in Iraq, ever". Some really excellent personal touches add to a game busting with personality and a hell of a lot going for it.
Aside from that I have played Riddick for 30 minutes, the opening is immense, sets the scene perfectly and visually it is the best looking Xbox game yet and is testament to how the Xbox can actually pull off something without having a PC port to compete with. Will post a more in depth opinion on that tomorrow or Friday when I get bored of FSW which probably won't be for a long while yet.
Haven't played much of Return of the King yet either, will give my opinion on that tomorrow when I have played it more.
I've heard you need a credit card to sign upto LIVE, can you use SOLO cards? Cheers ;)
