Hinorashi Yamaushi the leader of Nintendo he was supposed to retire a while back but this old guy continues to plague Nintendo. Squaresoft left, there is few 3rd party developers and the Gamecube was nearly axed thanks mainly to this man!

Yet why did he feel he could stop the Gamecube? Well he had a reason he thinks home consoles is only the first step, he believes it is the handhelds that are the future... and in part I agree.

Handhelds can be as powerful as it's older counter part, the Gamegear was indeed a mini Megadrive and if it had longer battery life would of succeeded. Now if lets say in 5 years time we are playing on a 128 bit handheld why would we want a home console?

Nintendo started on the mini systems with game and watch and if Nintendo's head honcho is right will finish on a mini system as well! Eventually midi discs would be used instead of carts and games this big with a super powered handheld would be a match made in heaven but what is the disadvantage of this idea?

The screen, a handheld screen would be too small and to be honest we all prefer bigger ones. Now this is easy to sort out link it into the TV and play it like on the big screen! Now lets think this through a handheld which is as powerful as a home console, can play it any where and on a TV and has large game storage in the form of small discs much like Gamecubes. This will be the future and indeed a bright one!

Playstation fans may object especially as Nintendo rule the handheld side of the market at the moment but put aside the petty differences and think about it. Maybe Hinorashi is right maybe we will no longer need these bulky machines and we can play games any where any time!

Of course it is a long way off a 128 bit handheld is something of fantasy at the moment but 5 years ago would you of thought you would be playing on a 32-bit Gameboy? Lets see how things will develop.

Yeah! I don't know why but there is something different and better about sitting in a comfortable chair watching your TV from a distance picking up a controller and playing a game!

Than....

Sitting hunched up in a chair and having your all-powerful handheld plugged into the wall so it didnt run out of power and having it inches from your face to see the screen, not as much colour from the LCD screen than on your TV damaging your eyes more, and then getting eye-strain and back ache for the rest of the day!!

But consoles will ALWYAS be able to use more powerful and BE more powerful. Where no matter how powerful HANDHELDS get without using up much battery, then there will always be the technology to make a console twice as powerful as that.

And to be honest I find it easyier and more comfortable to play on a home consike watching a TV then on a small, LCD sreen susceptible to glare hunched over holding it inches from my face. And also it is more awkward to play multiplayer, but there is the advantage of having your own screen!!

In the future, no matter how successful handehelds are, we would still need consoles.

Handhelds are becoming more and more powerfull but they will never be able to exceed the power of cosoles. Consoles they just grow and grow, faster and faster, from32bit to 128bit, but you will never see a handheld boast so much in five years time. Knocking the size of the chips to fit in consoles is bad enough imagine what it will be like for handhelds.

Another thing handhelds won't be able to boast is the size of their games. No doubtbig games will be able to fit on Minidisks, which would be amazing, but would a handheld console be able to support them??? well in the far future the answer would probably be yes, but at the moent, ofcourse not all they can support at the moment are the relatively small games held in cartridges.

Another reason why handhelds won't be able to succeed consoles is the excitment levels. Take the GBA for example a great hand held console, but it just doesn't keep as it would if you were playing it on games on your TV, the sound effects aren't the same, with the games being small it just won't have the lastability, of a consol game.

Don't get me wrong, I am not putting this idea out of the question because if this happend it would revolutionise everything.

There is still hope for this though, because if they can make the GBA they can go alot further.

Thanx for reading

True, technology will get smaller, faster and in general better as time goes by. But playing on a mini-screen does not have the same effect or impact as playing on huge widesceen TV with dolby digital sound. This sort of thing can never be replaced by a handheld, well not until you can plug your handheld into a TV.

But the gap between home consoles and portables will remain huge.
