I can't think it'd be that hard to tell if the AI is crap and if it's innovative or not.

Don't know about Live play but any review that calls the AI terrible and says there is no innovation has obviously been written by a person who hasn't even played it.

It's good to feel you're progressing/improving, it gives you a goal and makes each games results have a bit more meaning rather 'than just winning a round at that's it'. Also you can compare stats which is fun and if you're rubbish at a game at least you can try and get a good accuracy or something. :)
