Fair enough, when I was at school and college, I refused to listen to anything else but death metal.
Had the t-shirts, the attitude and the long hair.
But I grew away from that. I still listen to a LOT of rock music, but not much of it recently interests me. It's a hybrid of hip-hop and rock, nothing new at all. Run DMC and Aerosmith did this over 10 years ago, as did Anthrax with Public Enemy.
However, the one thing that the current bands all have in common is anger.
Not genuine passionate fury, but posing "Parents suck! Work is hard!" rantings from guys in their 30s. You think Fred Durst is alternative and a spokesman for your generation?
He's a thirtysomething head of Interscope Records. You can't get any more industry than that, so think twice when he's jumping about singing "Break Stuff" and "My Generation".
Now, there are bands out there that rock the hard jams, but without the macho teen-angst posturing of these jock-rock bands.
Tool, Muse, Corrosion of Conformity..and (here it comes)
Clutch.
Now, dont sigh and tune out.
If you like rock music, then do me one favour - go out and buy a Clutch album and realise that you can rock like a mutha without having to swear and scream about how much life sucks. I'm no prude, I swear with the best of them, but with music, swearing just defeats the purpose.
Clutch used to be a hardcore, anger filled shouting-himself-raw band. But they grew and evolved into something else entirely.
How would I describe them?
A mix of Led Zepplin, Dr Suess, Corrosion of Conformity, Creedence Clearwater and disco.
Odd mix maybe, but that's what Clutch are.
They have the most furious rhythm section you will ever heard. The groove that they lay down makes you feel like dancing across the room.
Yes, the singer can shout...like few others. But it's not anger, it's passion.
The songs aren't about "I HATE MY MOM AND DAD! WORK IS REALLY, REALLY HARD".
They sing about everything and anything you can think of.
Be it rednecks in America that live in the woods and make soap to sell, Aliens on Mars using humans to harvest diamonds for them...all manner of things.
But not once do you listen to them and think "Yeah, life sucks, being a teenager is hard".
Of course it is, that's what these bands play into. Saying "Yeah, you feel alienated and hard done by. Get aggressive and angry!" is not an achievment.
No sirree, Clutch will make you turn the stereo up, sing along and, above all, make you smile.
Not a comedy band at all, but so full of energy and brilliant, brilliant groove and rhythm that it's impossible to not want to feel good listening to it.
I've seen them live 4 times now, and each time has been a fantastic gig. They play usually for about 2hrs. They play the songs from the albums, but they add to them, turn a 3 minute song into a huge freeform jam.
Big smiles on the crowd, pure entertainment.
Albums so far from the earliest 1st:
Transational Speedway Leagues:Anthems and Anecdotes
Clutch
The Elephant Riders
Jam Room
Pure Rock Fury
If you're new to them, please, go out and start from the 2nd one, Clutch.
But how can you not like a group that calls an album "Pure Rock Fury"?
Exactly, you cant.
So, take a chance, turn off Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Linkin Park etc and open your mind just a little bit.
I promise you wont be disappointed at all.
Here's an idea of their lyrics "Muchas Veces" from Elephant Riders:
MUCHAS VECES (Many Times)
Went to the five and dime,
bought myself a copy of Time,
and on the cover was a woman that I knew
when I was excavating in the mountains of Peru.
I caught a plane to L.I.A.
I didn't know what I would say.
Maybe she would like me, I had lost a lot of weight
since she had last seen me in 1988.
Went to a local bar and ordered a cerveza,
asked a man about the woman on the cover,
dijo, "Claro que si, es el presidente's daughter."
Asked him where she might me,
"You did not hear this from me.
The girl is a terrorista
en las montanas a Chuquibambilla."
Took a bus through mountains.
Oh, my head was pounding.
Got to stay strong and carry on.
Got to stay strong, it won't be long.
Arrived in the villa surrounded by guerrillas.
Then my girl took me in her arms.
She said, "How have you been?
Oh, but I'll see you again."
I woke up in a coffin underneath
an altar to the east of Machu Pichu.
Crawled from the royal tomb.
The sun was bright, it burned my eyes.
I knew that she was gone
so I went down to the riverside
and I cried.
I went down to the riverside
I went down and I cried.
Muchas veces, I don't know if I'm coming or I'm going.
Muchas veces, I'm at a loss as what to do.
Muchas veces, I don't know if I'm coming or I'm going.
Muches veces, I'm at a loss as what to do.
My friend said, "She's nothing but pain."
I said, "I still love her the same.
All she needs is a little bit of love and
I'm sure I can make her change some."
"What about that girl in Zaire
that you met while a volunteer?
She got quite the education and
quite the pair of legs on her."
"Oh, she married an Englishman,
a correspondent for CNN.
She thought he was rather handsome
in a UN blue flak jacket.
Oh, I see where your coming from,
but for me there is no other one.
I must be on my merry way."
Went to the five and dime,
bought myself a copy of Time,
and on the cover was a woman that I knew
claiming she was a kahuna down on Oahu.
Caught a plane to H.I.A.
The sun was bright, it burned my eyes.
I knew that she was near because I felt
shivers on my spine.
I felt fine
Just remember, no swearing this time or you'll be banned again.
Play nice.
You won't be disappointed in

You won't be disappointed in Clutch.

My favorite rock band for about 6 years now.
Fantastic lyrics, full of humour (but not sung in a funny way), incredibly rythmic songs with a rude groove and, above all else, they rock like nobodies business.
If you want a sample, I can do you a mixer CD.
email me if you want one

Are Clutch that good? I'm tempted to get an album after what you said, but i'm not too sure at the moment.
