I Bought a Broadband adapter from [Insert a Well know rival here] the other day to Test out my copy of PSO I & II - after playing it for 5 minutes I realized what a pile of rubbish it really was. 4 out of 10 people were cheaters and the other 6 were either unwelcoming to the so called community or bust plain ignorant. But I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t the odd good senior citizen playing, which was kind and helpful – to an extent.
So after wasted the 30 day PSO virginity I decided to try Warp-pipe. At this stage I wanted to take the modem back, for a full 30 pound refund, but if warp-pipe was good then that would warrant me keeping it. After going on the official website, registering twice, and downloading the Latest software I clicked on the find Players button. Checked the filter box to Mario Kart – and hey presto – 1 player online. I’ve know graveyard’s more popular on Friday the 13th at midnight when the clock strikes twelve.
Taking the blow on the chin I decided to click on his name, to find that I had to add him to MSN to contact him. After adding the Yankee, we talked. He gave me his IP address, I pasted it into the un-user friendly Warp-pipe and we both clicked LAN. Honestly nothing happened except the Mario kart LAN clock ticked down from Sixty to Naught.
Couple of attempts and I decide that either There’s something wrong at my end, or this Yankee couldn’t find his ass with both hands – so I decided to Try and look for some more players. Fortunately one other member had just signed in, and after speaking to him he pointed out the fact that a new Warp-pipe had been released. I told him that I just downloaded the latest version off the website, but he persisted to tell me that I was outdated. He sent me his version and to my surprise it was a new, friendlier Warp-Pipe with a great AIM Buddy-List type interface and a simple button to start a game with any selected player or talk to anybody prior to a game. This really did look promising.
I added the New and Improved Friendly Yank to the Warp-Pipe buddy list and pushed begin game button. A Message told me to begin LAN and after 10 seconds I was on the LAN screen customizing the game options for me and this Yank to play!
Only one Tiny problem though, just one minor set back – it was the slowest thing I’ve ever seen, and for a fast paced 150cc race it was ridiculous – the Lag factor was against me like the wind blowing against you on your way home from school / town / work if you walk that is …
I knew there would be some type of Lag, but not this much. I asked what ‘k’ his connection was. 1024k cable he replied – and my connection is 512k so I would have thought everything would have been hunky dory.
This bad experience urged me to return the Modem in near perfect condition to the shop. Mario Kart would have been a timeless classic if the online gaming had of worked via Warp-pipe. In my eyes Warp-Pipe seemed unfinished, unorganized and unpopular as I could only find one person online at American Peak Times. I guess the moral of the story is that Game cube online isn’t really meant to be – That’s why this Unofficial Game-cube online venture has made me look at Xbox Live; with plenty of people on, little lag, and a Voice Communicator that Phantasy star for the cube cries out for. I’d advise you to stay away from Warp-Pipe and stick to Offline Mario Kart goodness.

And I told you that PSO wouldn't be that good online on GC. If only you'd sampled its delights back on DC, you would have some great memories instead.
