What does the future hold?? This is a question that has been on my mind for some time. Usually it just passes through like it is just another thought that you don’t give the time or day, but with all the free time I have got on my hands at the moment I have got to thinking.

If you think about it, our generation have had it easy; we get to play computer games regularly, go out and have fun with out a worry in the world but “what does the future hold??” in our lives. Me myself believe that it can’t be all that good; our country is still being controlled by labour and war is always a possibility that is waiting around the corner (nooooooo, not war, ahhhhh).

This is not what I what I want to talk about, even though it is a serious matter, that shouldn’t be taken lightly. I want to talk about gaming and the future that it can expect. I know that this has been talked about many times and it is starting to get slightly tedious, but times have changed and I am thinking is it really going to be all that good??

The first issue that I’m going to talk about is consoles. With the PS2 release done and dusted, Sony has already got deep into work on the PS3; will this really be a great improvement to the PS2?? Do we really need these improvements though; I was happy play on my nes and snes, the N64 and psx are good enough for me but obviously not for the companies, and all they are thinking about now is improvements, on their already good consoles.

In a years time, as you all know the Game Cube will be released to the British public, with great graphics, 3rd party support, and now disks. A lot of people are relieved that Nintendo have move to disks, because they can now have larger and better games, Will this get Nintendo’s sales up??? I don’t know.

We have already seen the demise of the great company Sega. Their downfall started with the Sega Saturn, Sega introduced disks, but they just did not work, the Saturn’s disks was to hard to program so it flopped. Will the same happen with Nintendo?? Well it could do, this is a first for Nintendo, and it is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Back to Sega, and their newest console the Dreamcast, this is a great console, and worthy of having the name Sega on it, but it has not done well at all, it has done so bad that Sega have stopped production. What was wrong with this console though, it had great games and brilliant specs, but Sega’s reputation fell because of the Saturn and it could not get back on its feet.

I don’t actually want to talk about consoles; I want to talk about games and their future. When games were first played they were new and original, no one never knew what to expect, so they kept us happy, but as time progressed games have started to repeat themselves and are starting to get a bit tedious. I am not saying all games are bad, because they are not (conkers bad fur day, oh what fun :D) because some do keep us entertained. But they do not have the originality as when games were first released, ideas are just running short.

This brings me to the topic of sequels; a lot of games released now are sequels as you all know. At least 50% of the games on the PS2 at the moment are sequels (Shhhhh turbo, keep quiet, no lists please of “original games”) Being a sequel doesn’t make a game a bad thing, because they can keep us entertained, but they do lack that originality that everyone wants. So as time progresses games are getting worse, but can they get better?? This is a question you must answer yourself, but hopefully they will.

This is all I got to sat at the moment

Thanx
