When does it stop being current?
When does it become old?
When does it become a retro title?
After 5 years? 10? ... 1?
Are 1998 games retro?
Do games go straight from being current to retro? or is there a middle ground, an undefined gaming limbo where games are too old to be current, but to new to be retro?
I suppose I'm asking,
'What is Retro?'
...and just as much...
'When is Retro?'
A real retro game has to look really old compared to what games are like now e.g. look at Super Mario Bros. on the NES or California Games on the Megadrive. They are really retro.
My last thought on retro games is that they have to be really simple compared to present-day games e.g. a retro wrestling game wouldn't have 50+ wrestlers, interactive arenas, Create-a-Wrestler etc.
Whereas, I'm alwasy hearing that Half-Life, whilst getting on a bit, is still pretty much a current title...
Surely just because a title is good, doesnt mean its retro status shouldnt be put on hiatus... just that it should become a classic?
> Saturn games aren't even classed as games, barring Nights,
lol... ouch! ... Not the worlds biggest Saturn fan huh? :)
In fact, another thought struck me...
Some of these retro games are STILL considered classics even by today`s standards. How come???
Alot of them had even been surpassed during their own lifetime. eg: The Leaderboard series. And if we truely do judge them using today`s standards they would not pass on looks or technical achievement.
Just gameplay...
To be honest, i`m as much in the dark as you are Mr Shanks.
Do they become retro if the format they appeared on no longer survives or has been superseeded?
